Getting old and diabetese
This morning driving back from an appointment I suddenly felt very strange, my eyes blurred slightly, I felt very hot, thirsty and excessively hungry. I was supposed to collect a friend for lunch but had to make a detour home, I was quite shaky by now, ran into my apartment and made a grab at the fridge, the first thing I found was cheese I made a sandwich on grainy bread and ate it like I had never had food ever! I was so hungry, 10 minutes later I was fine. This has happened on previous occasions but prior to me being diagnosed type 2 could it be connected to my diabetes?

it sounds like hypoglycemia, but you would never know for sure without a blood glucose monitor............

are you on medication for the type 2?

its worth investing in a monitor for times like these.....;)

Thanks for your replies. Yes I have a monitor but I was in such a state I ate the food before I thought of testing. Might make an appointment with my DN I don't take any meds as trying to control with diet and doing quite well thanks again

Where do your bloods normally run, at that sort of time of the day?

most meds are for high BG, low BG is harder to treat..may have been an adrenalin hit too
did you miss a meal or do something more strenuous ? have a snack between meals, don't go more than 3 hrs without something?
see your Dr for some tests

Around lunchtime my bloods are usually in the five' s, also I had eaten breakfast just 3hrs beforehand so I couldn't understand why I felt so desperately hungry

Thanks Jack, I had eaten only 3hrs earlier and was on my way for lunch so there would be 3hrs between meals, when I'm at home I make sure I have a snack, have now put some jelly babies in the pocket of all my coats ha

To be honest, as a one-off, I wouldn't read too much into it. You didn't test, so you have no way of confirming you went low, or anything else. We could speculate until we're blue in the face, but, we'll never know now.

On the question of why you might have been hungry today? I have no idea, but perhaps you have been running at a minor deficit for a few days/a while, and your body just demanded a bigger trough today. We're not automatons. Non-diabetics aren't automatons either.

Moving forward, I'd keep an eye on things, but perhaps carry something with me I could eat, quickly, should something similar recur. But, I would also ensure I tested next time. I always have a small pack of nuts or seeds in my handbag; just in case. The current bag has been there since early August. I ate the previous pack very early one morning, coming off an overnight flight, very jet-lagged. I just felt I needed something extra to eat.

Thank you, from now on I will take my meter with me when going out. Will give it a few days and if it should happen again will make an appointment with the nurse as it was a little scary. Thanks everyone

But, do also take something with you, so that if you do feel like you need to eat (rather than just feel a bit peckish), you can address it without driving your stress levels higher, which I'm sure you did in your efforts to get home etc.
