Would it be safe to do a water fast (no food just water but maybe with some black coffee), currently on 2000mg of Metformin per day.
Can only get bg to 7 (rare) so thinking this may give it the kick and then to break the fast to have just protein ?

Have you started with some intermittent fasting to ease yourself in or are you wanting to try hard core?
I don't water only fast and have tea with lactofree milk and coffee with double cream which helps with hunger pangs.
I had a fairly strict regime at the start where I replaced breakfast with the tea when I was diagnosed and went very low carb. This kick started my weight loss and blood sugar control and i lost quite a lot of weight fast. After about 9 months of this I hit a plateau and then started some longer fasting. It might be harder to do longer water only fast if you aren't fat adapted but it shouldn't do you any harm. Try it and see how you get on.

Thank you, was just worried because of my tablets.

Fasting is typically effective when we have fats to lose. And as @bulkbiker suggested, it gets easier when we start with intermittent fasting, eg 16-18 hours without food. That will help us adjust to normalize insulin/glucose levels.

Most recommend skipping breakfast...but I found skipping dinner to be more effective for bringing down my fasting glucose reading. It took only a couple of intermittent fasting sessions to bring down my fasting glucose to 5.5 mmol.

Yeah i second suggestion provided in earlier post.... just to add my 2 cents keep monitoring your BG every 2-3 hrs just to ensure safety... again this is my personal experience when i break fast on yogurt full fat with active culture it helps system after prolong fasting...

I was wondering about fasting once a week. Possibly by eating an early dinner on, say, a Tuesday evening and then eating a slightly later dinner on the Wednesday evening. So 24 hours without food but eating each evening. However, would black coffee be ok during those 24 hours? I think I could go without food, it's the coffee I need!

I have coffee with cream.. doesn't have much effect on me so black should be fine.

Well, I did a 24 hour water-and-black-coffee fast from yesterday to today. I ate dinnercat 18.30 last night and my leveks were 5.9 when ivwent to bed.

My levels were much higher through today than they would normally be. By mid afternoon they had reached 9.8! That was after 20 hours. I did eat at 19.30 and then tested 2 hours later when they had dropped slightly to 8.4. But have just tested before going to bed and they are still relatively high (for me at this time of day) at 7.8.

So it's not looking promising so far.....

I did another 24 hour (well, actually 23) fast today. Forgot to take my.meter to work but when I came home I was 8.8. I cycled to/from work which takes about an hour each way (it's 12 miles snd I'm slow!) Which I thought would have helped but it seems not. It was 7.8 just before dinner and 5.3 3 hours later (went out to see a friend after dinner and didn't take the meter as I didn't expect to be that long).

On a positive note, my FBG this morning was 6.3 which is really low for me. I'll be interested in tomorrow mornings result.

Hi Beatrix
Have you tried it yet? I did two over two days, wasn't too bad but I found my bs crept up and up during the day. However, yesterday I had one of the lowest FBG I've ever had. In fact, if I discount fbgs that were low after I'd drink alcohol the night before (always gets my FBG down) then I think it might have been my lowest.

I'm going to aim at doing this twice a week to see if it kick starts my metabolism.

I hope it works for you.

I am considering doing a water fast. I would have to do it when my OH is away as he would still eat and I couldn't do it with cooking smells. I want to get to grips with this low carb diet first though.
