Hi folks I have a strange question.

Daughter number 2 is getting wed in late October

I have been looking around for something suitable to wear as mother of the bride and found something I really liked.
It's a shift dress with overlay of lace in navy, I have a jacket that is off white and 3/4 sleeves, I have the shoes to match the dress and a fascinator and matching handbag. Now the outfit in total has cost me about £100 as I've bought in the sales. I'm happy with how it looks and for a girl that doesnt wear dresses, shoes, tights (ladylike stuff) I feel its appropriate for me.

Now the stupid dilemma is my soon to be other mother to the happily wed couple is sending details via her son for websites for me to find the 'perfect' dress for the wedding. The dresses start from £300. Yes some of them are lovely but I feel £300 is too much to pay for a dress. Where my conscience now pricks is if the groom's mother is planning on wearing a £300 + dress should i rethink my outfit and buy perhaps another dress that wasnt in the sales and costs a bit more, and keep the other dress for perhaps going out with hubby? The other thing that goes through my head is I dont do ladylike/girlie, I live in jeans, hoodies, trainers or boots. Should I accept that the outfit will only be worn once at the wedding and just keep what I have? Should I buy a new outfit that costs more? The only person that has seen me in the outfit is my stepson and he's definately not clued up on fashion, neither is my husband.

Daughter number 2 has seen the dress on the website, and the shoes. I showed her the bag and fascinator yesterday (bought new from British Heart Foundation charity shop). I dont want to enter a competition to see who can wear the most expensive outfit but the other mother is definately one of these that has to be the best.

I do have another outfit in mind but to be honest it isnt that much more different to what I already have.

I'm just baffled people can pay £300 + for a frock when I feel I have been quite savvy in what I have.

Any thoughts people?

And please dont ask me to put a photo up of me in the combined outfit, I feel enough of a plum already hee hee

Thankyou

Stick with what you chose. The perfect outfit can cost as little or as much as you want. What makes it perfect is that you have chosen it to suit you.

Like you I'm not a "dresses' girl either so I was really happy to find an outfit I liked for my son's wedding. There s no way I would have swapped it for something else. I think it's rather rude of anyone else to poke their nose in actually. Well done for finding something you like without help from anyone

I'd go with what you've already brought as long as your comfortable wearing it .......I had a similar sort of problem when my daughter got married........ but she said to me she didn't care if I turned up in my birthday suit as long as I was there......so I wore what I'd chosen and had a great time......I'm thinking your daughter is feeling the same........

Thanks to you both.

I spoke to my daughter without her fiance being there and she was quite pleased with what I had bought and managed to get it so reasonable. She knows its a big deal for me being as I dont dress up. She said to ignore other mother as she is usually in uniform at work.

Daughter said I could wear what I liked as long as I was there. So maybe I'll go wear some jeans and a top ha ha (I am joking), I'll stick with the savvy dress and accessories. After all they will only be going to the charity shop afterwards

Good decision, in my humble opinion. wolfie11969. It's important for you to feel comfortable. Perhaps send a polite thanks to the other mum saying you already have your outfit? I'm sure you'll have a lovely day.:)

I'm sure you and your family and freinds will have a wonderful time. It is important to be comfortable and not to feel as though you are in some sort of competition with 'Other Mum'. I wish the Happy Couple all the best.
