Hey, I've recently lost control of my diabetes and stopped injecting which is mainly because of the weight i gain when using insulin as apposed to losing weight without injecting, does anyone else have weight issues with diabetes or is there a way to balance the two?

Please keep taking your insulin. While I understand that you want to look good, it's not worth ending up in the hospital with DKA.

There are 2 basic things to do:

Exercise more and more consistently.Exercise keeps weight gain at bay, for most people. Increased insulin sensitivity as a result of exercise, is a bonus.

Eat less carbs, so you don't have to dose as much insulin. We think about carbs only at meal times, I find, and only at a carb to insulin ratio, 'how much should I inject?', and that's about it. But if you added up how many grams of carbs you're eating daily, you'd be shocked. And in most cases, it's totally unnecessary. There's always a lower carb alternative.

You lose weight when not injecting insulin because your body thinks it's starving. Your cells aren't getting any glucose for energy so they think you are not eating and start to breakdown tissues in your body for energy, it won't work to give you energy because you still have no insulin to get the glucose into your cells to be used - your body will break down muscle and organ tissue in starvation mode. The breakdown can make you dangerously acidotic and lead to DKA, which can be life threatening.

With holding insulin in order to lose weight is recognised as a form of eating disorder. Have a look at the thread on diabulmia -

Injecting insulin doesn't make you gain weight. There is absolutely a way to balance healthily taking insulin and weight loss. The same advice of eat less and exercise more applies to anyone on insulin as it would to a non diabetic, along with the addition of, if you are eating less carbs and doing more activity you will need to reduce your insulin accordingly in order to avoid hypos.

Hi @cranked75

I wonder if it's help you to take a look at the Diabulimia section at the top of this page. It covers any problems with eating and is for anyone, male or female, young or old.

All without any judgement :)
