weight gain

Hi all
been disganose for 1 year as t1 now and have gone from hb1 of 12.8 to the last 2 of 5.7. I am on 12 units of units of Lantus and approx 15 to 20 units of novorapid a day split over 3 doses. My problem is i am eating a healthy diet and exercise 3 times a week swimming for an hour but the weight is just creeping on all the time. I eat far less now than before diagnosis and my bmi is in the good range at last check up 3 months ago although towards the high end but i know that when i go for my next check up i will have put on another 1 to 2 kg. i cant seem to stop the weight creeping on and it is starting to get me down. I feel i can't eat much less as am quite often hungry now.

Any ideas

Cheers

Hey Curleous,

I have recently gained some weight and I know how it can be an issue to lose it. A doctor recently increased my insulin and placed me on a sliding scale which means I take my normal amounts of insulin but if my glucose is high I have to take amounts of another type of insulin depending on certain ranges. Based on my experiences my weight gain came from a number of factors but mainly when I have my lows, which tend to be in the night time when I sleep, I tend to eat at weird hours and then go back to bed so I guess the weight starts from there (the no eating after 6pm rule does work lol). If you are really over your normal weight for your height, you could also ask your doctor to test your thyroid it could be under active and possibly be a factor in your weight gain. Also if you are on any vitamins I have found some types increase your cravings for food. I lost a few pounds eating healthy, doing aerobics, a small snack after each meal, as well as drinking 8 glasses of water to burn off the weight and you can chew sugarless gum to help with the munchies. Hope this helps.

thanks for this..i dont normally eat after 6 or 7 unless to correct a low reading which is not that often as all low readings seem to be mid morning. I dont drink enough water i know that so will give that a go. It is very frustating as i now eat far less than i used to and probably well below 2000 calories a day yet still putting weight on.

Thanks

Gem,
I would be curious to know which vitamins increase your craving for food - it could help me to know.
I have lost 3 stone but still need to lose some more and have hit a plateau now. I take several vitamins and wonder if any could be making things more difficult.
Thanks

Hi daisy1,

I guess everything affects us differently but the one vitamin that I will never take again is the Centrum multivitamin/multi-mineral. Every time I took it I would get the urge to eat and I did put on weight during that time. I have two other friends who claim the same thing so I guess its packed with so much ingredients it makes your body crave more...I really do not know. I am still looking for a good vitamin but I am taking a B complex now, I do not remember the name but it helps to give you energy and increase your metabolism and it’s good for diabetics. Try to avoid vitamins high in sugar and sodium. Also, I always ask the pharmacist for help because those "diabetic vitamins " are usually for type 2 diabetics and their medication can have a totally different affect on type 1s and vice versa so it’s good to differentiate between the two and purchase the one best for you. Hope this helps :) .

Thanks Gem for the info :) I am taking a multivitamin but its from Healthspan and I think its OK - I don't get food cravings - I just can't lose any more weight. I am also taking Vitamin B complex, plus other supplements for example Omega 3 as after losing 3 stone my skin is loose and wrinkly and I almost feel like putting the weight back on because of it :( Do you know what's good for skin? Mine has lost its elasticity. :( Beginning to feel old :(

Hey daisy1,

:D I am really not an expert on this issue but I think the following will help you just fine with the feeling that you describe in your last line. Its a popular song from where I am from, please check out this link, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GRebawucM5Y. In terms of loose skin the only thing that comes to mind is light areobics. I know that it helps with toning the body and muscles and perhaps it can help some with the issue. Please do not get frustrated, these things take time and its a good thing that you are working on being more healthy. No need to take a step back, with the right mix you can surely get the results that you want. I have found that researching the internet helps with any questions that I have so maybe you can try and find further information there. All the best.

Hi

I was first put onto Lantus about 3/4 years ago and i also found i gained weight, i told my diabetic nurse and she said that weight gain is one of the affects of Lantus because it is one of the first insulins introduced that lasted 24 hours. So she changed me over to Levemir which i have had no problems with and the weight gain stopped.

Thank you Gem for the cheerful song. I have bookmarked it so I can find it again. Thank you also for the kind encouraging words :)
