Weight Gain

I have been a type 2 diabetic for 3 years and not responded well to tablets. Metformin caused severe headaches and nausea - there is a family history of heart desease, my father died at 56 and my brother had a heart attack at 52 and 58. I am 51 and currently on exanitide twice a day and 1 x80mg Gliclazide this has been increased to 2 x 80mg twice daily over the past 5 weeks. My problem is I have gained 10lbs in the last four weeks - I am already 4 stone overweight so I can't cope with this situation, and there is no significant change to my blood sugar levels. My GP refered me to the diabetic clinic who told me to change my diet and excercise more :x . There are some changes I can make to my diet but not enough to make this sort of difference. I am a special needs teacher - I teach Adults with various difficulties and am constantly on the go. My class room is three floors up and I NEVER use the lift as I am afraid of being trapped in one. I have a terminal ill husband and a 15 year old son, so all the house-work etc is down to me. My question is "If I stop taking the Gliclazide and monitor my blood sugar level carefully would this be a good course of action to take?". I also have a very efficient metobolic rate which adapts to change in diet very quickly and stores fat for use at a later date - how many more joys can a girl cope with? Please can you give me some advice.

Hi Karinya

Firstly welcome to the forum

Sorry to hear that you have a lot of stress and stains to deal with above those of normal daily life…

You asked about what happens if you drop some of your medication, we aren’t actually medically qualified to advise of this, nor are we privy to you and your medical records.. so this part needs to be discussed with your doctor… However we can give you our experience with how different diets we’ve used worked for us and support…

I would look around the forum, and take a look at some of the options available, in your case with what details you’ve given us, I would start with the G.I diet options as this isn’t such a lifestyle change as it would be if you went straight for the extreme low carb diet, If you look out for posts by a member called Tubolard, and catherchurub, these two amongst others have had really fantastic results from using the G.I diet approach.. I know that Tubolard has lost a very large amount of weight impressive amount, and due to this has had there medication reduced to match the better results they’ve achieved

You can adapt the G.I diet approach and incorporate some of the Low carbing methods and meals and do a compilation of both so that you find a diet that suits and works for you… This will hopefully lead you to achieve your goals…

Most (but not all) clinics will put you on a high carb low fat diet, which especially in conjunction with an insulin stimulating drug like glic will almost guarantee weight gain.

Have a read around here

http://loraldiabetes.blogspot.com/2006/10/d-day.html

also the Stickies and Success Stories threads, see if you can't adjust your diet to give you better numbers.

While you are doing this, be sure to always carry glucose tabs, orange juice or some similar high carb thing in case you go hypo from the glic

Exenitide, is Byetta and is meant to cause weigth loss. Gliclazide is a beast for causing weight gain. I stopped using it and started losing.
Definitely try the low GI approach and consider the low carb.
It's safe, doesn't cost anything and works.

I've been put on gliclazide for about two months now i am also on metaformin,i was lossing weight when i was on just metformin but since i've been taking the Glic i've put weight on,my nurse that in the passed has kept telling me to lose weight is now only bothered about what effect the Glic has on my before meal blood reading,i told her i don't think the Glic is helping with my weight and she said it shouldn't make a differance to me being able to lose weight,so i feel i'm fighting against the Glic to drop some weight and i'm not winning, soooo fed up, :( shan x

You definitely need to take a good look at your diet shan, I had to tweak mine when I was on Glic. There are many alternatives, you just need to find the right one for YOU.

Hi Karinya,

It is quite revealing that you are taking both Byetta and a high dose of gliclazide. Byetta makes your pancreas produce insulin in response to food and gliclazide simply forces your pancreas to produce insulin, regardless of what you have eaten. The fact that there is no change in your blood sugar levels means one of two things: either your pancreas is not able to produce sufficient insulin or your diet contains an unusually large amount of carbohydrate. The solution to either of these has to be to reduce the carbs. This doesn't have to be drastic and doesn't involve any form of lifestyle change so should have absolutely no impact on your job. It would also help you to lose weight.

Let us know if you would like more information

I've gained so much weight on pioglitazone I'm starting to notice it, things like running up stairs are harder. about a stone over the last year iirc. It's annoying because my diet has improved in that time, makes me want to give up on eating better!
At least the nurse at the doctors and the dietitain at the hospital seem ok, both suggested reducing carbs.
