My weight seems to be the most sensitive marker to how my diet is going. As you can see from the image below, which starts when I began my keto diet in July 2016, occasions like my birthday and Xmas have a pronounced effect on my weight, but soon wear off. Whereas our November holiday in Florida was more problematic. The small blips are quite normal for any diet, I think.

The Florida holiday is noticeable, but I didn’t pig out; no pasta, rice, starches, potato etc. I don't drink alcohol. What I did have was bread, before meals when eating out (when it is often served with olive oil) and back at our condo, when I was delighting in modest amounts of German Schwarzbrot (coarsely ground whole rye grain, natural sourdough, heavy with seeds) from a local bakery. I also had at least one ice cream a day. The Florida part is a straight line because I just connected up the start and end weights, I didn't measure my weight or bloods at all. But 8kg in 3 weeks is very disappointing. All my blood sugars and lipids are OK, it's just my weight that needs sorting; I am overweight (BMI 29 at the start of my diet) and need to get that down to normal.

From this I realise that I have a very high intolerance for carbs and bread in particular. It is just the wrong thing for me to eat and means that I immediately come out of ketosis and put on weight.

I am now resolved to keeping my carbs as low as possible at all times, so I do not try things out to see if they have an effect, I know they will and will set me back by weeks at a time.

Many, many years ago I went to Weight Watchers and lost 3 stones. What I recall most from the talks is that it was drummed in to us that we all have red light foods and the trick is finding which they are as "we are all different". For some it was potato, for others it was cheese, for some it was alcohol or bread. We had to find out on a trial and error basis. So you now know your red light food is bread.

So, how does one go about identifying which food(s) are an individual's 'red light' food regarding weight? I'm hoping the answer isn't to avoid eating various foods, as I really struggle with doing that :(

I've cut carbs, so no bread, potatoes, rice, potatoes, pastry, cakes, biscuits, sugar and I eat butter, cream, olive oil, have lost 3 st over the past year but now seem to 'stuck'! I need to lose another 3 stone to be within 'normal' weight limits so it would be useful to know what my 'red light' is, unless it's just that I'm eating too much so possibly calorie intake is too high :(

My red light food is alcohol- half a bottle of Malbec last Saturday put 3.5lb on takes me 4-5 days to get it back off so only drink now and then otherwise it would be a vicious circle - although I have a 24hr pass this weekend with my hubby - no responsibilities for 24hr so will be partaking of quite probably more than half a bottle - ;)

Wheat in any form does it for me. Other grains less so, but still more than root veg.

Well done on recognising the pattern. :)

I find it only adds weight whilst I am carrying it from the shop :P

well pigs are fattened with grains... and humans maybe the same.... but of cause we can be different in that matter... I used to love bread and always wondered how other people did loose weight... but being both a bread and fruit person ... and candy .... now I understand why my very low fat diet never worked at all... not even the 800 calorie only fruit diet....for some weeks.... only lost 500 grams...

My red light food seems to be flour as far as BS are concerned, and therefore anything that contains it. So I suppose that is grains. As for weight, I think my brightest red light food was alcohol. In the past when I have given it up completely I have always lost weight. (despite never having been a heavy drinker)
