Hi - may I ask a quick question….

I am Type 1 and have been for 34 years pretty good control always 80% plus in range but struggle with maintaining my weight.
I’m usually 10st 4Lbs but had a virus a couple of weeks ago and am now 10st.
Now I’m not the biggest of guys but I’ve noticed the weight loss and would like some advice from anyone else that has maybe had this issue previously as to how to add fat/calories into my diet without upsetting my BG.
My wife tells me I am not eating enough and I believe she may be right.
Carbs morning 35 carbs lunchtime 50 carbs evening meal 55 carbs.
Appreciate any thoughts or ideas that may help.
Thanks so much.
Tony

As T1 you are more susceptible to other autoimmune conditions such as coeliac, one of whose symptoms is unexplained weight loss. It can be otherwise asymptomatic. Try the extra calories through fats but mention the weight loss at your next check up and request a blood test.

Hi @TonyBlue,

Were you able to eat when you had the virus? Some illnesses take away all appetite and give extra symptoms if food’s eaten. You may find that your weight creeps a bit up naturally now that you’re well.

If you want to add to it then maybe having a bit to eat between meals would help: just bolus for any carbs. Also, try piling a bit more on your plate or adding an extra something at lunch and dinner.

You don’t say what kind of things you’re eating now so it’s hard to suggest just what to add for weight gain.

Good luck.

Usually breakfast is wholemeal toast, lunch is again Wholemeal bread and crisps then evening meal varies all home cooked food though I think I’m just trying too hard to keep in range and believe eating less is the way forward when obviously it’s not.
I have an appt. with the DSN in 2 weeks so I’ll chat through what I can do better ref the weight gain appreciate all the comments very helpful and supportive

Not being on holiday....
Hi
Do you have any siblings?
Some peoples metabolism makes weight gain difficult and i know someone who eats vast amounts and does not put on weight which is why i asked about a sibling.
I too have good control and all i bother with is watching my carb intake.

I can put on weight and lose weight easily enough and my body works well in response to physical activity and insulin.
If i want to lose weight i stop eating and let my background insulin take care of my levels and if i want to gain weight i eat more carbs and use novorapid and activity to take care of my levels.
My ability to not eat disturbs my wife and my GP but it works for me.

If i were in your shoes i would cease the physical activity and eat more with insulin controlling my levels but as i say that may only work for me.

I have 50 years of being a type 1 and a hba1c of 39 5ft7 and 11 stone.

I wish you well

Tony

Hi Tony[emoji[emoji6]] you make some great points which I appreciate I am now trying to eat more and am feeling full when I do eat which I’m hoping is a step forward but I know it will take time. I’m not going to over worry about what I eat for the next month I’m just going down the route of more calories and fats short term with added carbs and have snacks and bolus where needed.
Thanks again I’ll certainly keep you up to date with progress.
