Weight loss taking Metformin

Hi
I know this is probably a stupid question but can Metformin cause weight loss?
I have been taking Glucophage SR (2x500mg with breakfast) for 6 months-as previously stated only taking it for preventative measures. I haven't needed to change my diet as it was deemed to be healthy and have continued with my regular exercise.
My fasting readings are always never above the mid 4's so know the MF is doing it's job but I have lost a stone in weight-On one hand I know that is good but then I worry why I have lost this weight when I haven't been trying to!
I have non alcoholic fatty liver which had given me a bloated tummy/midriff but even that has started to reduce!

Just lucky I suppose.

Just out of interest - why are you taking met "as a preventative measure"? Met inreases your body's sensitivity to insulin (among other things), so if you are not insulin resistant, why are you taking met?

Long story but in short:
Oct 2008- had GTT-8.3 reading-diagnosed as IGT/Pre diabetic-was told no treatment and would be tested again next year!
Apr 2009-Saw endocrinologist-due to family history of Type 2/heart disease and diagnosis of NAFLD wanted to put me on MF-GP not in agreement so followed 12 months of debate between the two experts!
Aug 2009-Repeat GTT-6.2 reading-now 'normal'-GP felt vindicated
March 2010-Endo said MF had been shown to have beneficial effects for non diabetics with family history and my other conditions!_GP saying that it was my decision but if it was one of his family members he would advise them to take the MF!
Sept 2010- 6 months down the line of taking MF-lost 1 stone and fasting readings of 4's!

YEs!
in some cases Metformin DOES aid weight loss. It might be dose dependent, but at 2 X 500mg per day it doesn't work for me :(

Metformin was originally developed (50 odd years ago) as an appetite suppressant and only afterwards was it discovered to be helpful to diabetics.

I've been taking it for about 5 years and at first I had rapid weight loss - about one and half stone in 7 weeks or so. The weight continued to come off until I'd lost about two stone. Although my appetite eventually returned to 'normal', the weight stayed off and have only recently put a few pounds (5?) back on.

Good luck,

Russ
