Weight Loss

I have been a type 2 diabetic for over 6 years now and control my BS with Pioglitazone +Metformin 15mg +850mg twice a day plus Glicazide 80mg twice a day. My last diabetic clinic showed my average BS to be 8.1, slight up on last time 7.6.

The nurse gave me a very rough time over the increase as my weight had also increased by 6kg over 6 months. My problem is that I train 5 times a week doing 3 sessions of weighs and 2 sessions of cardio. I monitor my body fat and that has remained constant during the same period so my weigh increase is partly due to increases in muscle bulk. However there is also no doubt I have put some fat as I really struggle to lose any weight despite my efforts in the gym.

Can anyone suggest what I am doing wrong as the nurse has given me 3 months to lose a stone and even suggested that putting any weigh on is bad even muscle. I generally eat healthly but have a sweet tooth and do cheat particularly under stress.

I don't smoke or drink and honestly work very hard in the gym in an effort to stave off any effects of diabetes, but still can't seem to lose any body fat currently at 24%.

I am new to this site and would be very interested to hear from anyone that could help me combine losing body fat and yet still be able to build lean muscle and have the energy to train. I have noticed that if I try to cut down on my food in take I feel my BS dropping get light headed feel sick, and sweaty.

While I try to keep to a healthy diet I also take Whey protein in between meals to help with recovery and muscle growth. To cope with my sweet tooth I do use sweeteners. I would hope that my gym session would be compensating for anything I do wrong in my diet.
But clearly I am doing something wrong .

Hi Barry and welcome to the forum

Sorry that no-one has come back to you before now – I have to confess that I was thinking another bloke might be best to give advice and then you dropped off my radar!

You sound as if you go to a health club or at the least a gymn and there are usually professionals there who can help you to ensure you do the right things for your body and health issues so have you consulted anyone?

Food is the thing that will probably make the most difference so please tell us what you are eating. Hopefully then we can help. :D

Hi Barry
Only just got in and turned on my computer.
You're not doing anything wrong probably. Didn't your nurse tell you this tends to happen with Pioglitazone and Gliclazide( in most people). In fact Metformin, Byetta and Victoza are pretty much the only antidiabetic medications which don't do it. Check the leaflets in your packs under "side Effects"
You can sometimes get round it by reducing the carbs in your diet and hus also reducing your medication.
I have been diagnosed T2 since July 2003 and use only 2 - 3 X Metformin 500 per day. I eat very reduced carbs and have managed to lose over 42 pounds in the last couple of years. this is paltry by comparison with some other people on here, but it's the best I can manage. It's also one reason I got my need for Gliclazide down until I stopped all together.

Barry, I just noticed this post of todays date on the low carb threads which you may not have seen yet:

Re: low carb and kidney disease...

thanks again for these great replies , it really is helping me get to grips with things...thankyou...
regarding my dietician and my nurse, you mention low carb or atkins to them and they look at you like you have raped their grandma!!! they are totally non low carb full stop!!!
hence why i am here and to be honest the things i have noticed most whilst being on this low carb diet is the amount of energy i have, as in loads!! i have to go to the gym now to get rid of it or my sleep is down to 5 hrs!! i feel just bursting with it and tonight just had to let rip on the weights after my cardio!! do you always feel like this on a low carb?? or is it just me getting used to running on a high protein fuel?? sugars were down to 6.8 after dinner and gym tonight so looked good...these readings are the best i have had since startup, so must tell me something somewhere..the sports site you refferred me to looks good and i feel will help as well..
this is great and i am feeling very positive again thanks to this site and help from all!!!

It sounds as if you guys should chat! :)

Thanks for all the very useful advice will keep experimenting and seeing where that gets me. Although increasingly I see the future being little or no carbs.
