I am a T2. I lost 5kg by low carbing but for the last month have not lost any weight at all. Saw the doctor yesterday and he wants me to go from 77kg to 66kg at the rate of 1kg per week. He says I should cut 500 calories and exercise 500 calories worth every day.

I have never really exercised and can't see how I will do this everyday - I walk a bit but he wants aerobic!

I am also a vege with high Triglycerides - so cheese and milk products are out. This seriously limits the choice as I love Indian food.

I see that there are a no of people on this forum who have lost huge amounts of weight. Any wisdom gratefully received.

Your Doctor's advice is poor - 1000 calorie deficit per day is actually too much according to Govt. guidelines and the aim of aerobic exercise and calorie depletion is to lose fat, not go into catabolism (where muscle, as well as fat, is lost), which can happen if the calorie deficit is too high.

Aim for no more than 2lbs per week. For easy intro to aeobic, try a home mini trampoline (rebounder) and see how you get on. If you do no exercise just now, expecting you to suddenly burn 500 calories per day through exercise is alarming - exercise routines should be built up slowly and steadily for the non-active.

Hi Newbie,

My older{61} sister had just joined Weightwatchers when she was diagnosed last July with type two and after being put on 1x500 Metformin and following a Weightwatchers diet{non low carb} plus using a rebounder/trampette plus a stationary bike lost 50lb in weight in 22 weeks and has now come off the Metformin as her HbA1c had come down to recommended levels.

I was diagnosed Type 2 in January of this year and put on 1x500 Metformin to be taken morning and evening and have so far lot 24lbs through a low GI diet plus using a trampette, bike trainer and by working out to Rosemary Conely fitness video, plus plenty of walking, gardening and allotmenteering when the weather is good. Also do my usual household chores :) I have ovarian cysts so have found losing weight in the past very difficult despite doing lots of exercise but since going on the Metformin I have been gradually losing weight at around a lb a week which my diabetic nurse said was the best amount to lose each week to keep the weight off :)
