Hi, just registered, A concerned Dad.
My son, now 15 was diagnosed a couple of years ago with type 1 and was prescribed Mixtard 30 3 times daily. which seemed to work well enough, but was offered a regime change at his last clinic last summer. Now its Levimere at night and Novorapid when he chooses to eat.
Never overweight, in the last six months or so he has suffered considerable weightloss to the point where he is positively skeletal.
Any comment or experience shared would be greatly appreciated

go back and get him reviewed.

have u done an insulin adjustement course - he may be having a growth spurt and needs a review.

15 year olds are very difficult to fill up with food and he isnt getting enough calories by the sound of it. Go back to the clinic, or dietitian. I have 2 teenage boys and they need alot of food as they spring up so quickly - my middle son is 17 and has grown 7 inches this year and is now 6ft 5

Do u think he is eating enough - u know him better than anyone.

hi tabletop,
welcome to the forum.
The first thing to get checked is your son's hba1c, to see if there is a problem
with his long term control.
Also, while Levemir can be used once a day, it usually works best given twice daily.
(for a full 24 hour basal effect, rather than just dusk to dawn)

I should mention (as a type 1 since 11) that I was as skinny as a rake at 15 too.
It wasn't down to bad control, I guess it was just "part of growing up" as they say.

Regards,
timo.

Causes of unintentional weight loss

If the above suggestions don't help, maybe the Levemir or Novorapid don't suit him. I had persistent weight loss with a particular type of insulin in the 80s. It caused other problems too which we didn't initally blame on the insulin, but everything resolved when I changed back.
Hope you get it sorted out soon.
Sue
