My endocrinologist told me last week that he would write to my GP and recommend that I should go on to Lipostat to help me lose some more weight. I explained this to my GP this evening who told me in no uncertain terms, that it was not up to the consultant to say if I was able to be given this medication, but the GP himself. He suggested I go to a slimming class. After a heated debate I left. What should I do next?

What to do next ? Please get in contact with your Consultant and tell him what the GP said!!Hopefully the consultant will write to the Gp and tell him,in no uncertain terms ,that he has to prescribe Lipostat. If not then maybe the consultant will write the prescription himself.
Lipostat is a statin which works by reducing the production of cholesterol by the liver it is not a weight loss medication.

Here is a link with information about Lipostat.

Etiquette.

The Consultant usually 'asks' the GP to prescribe. If there is a problem then he can pull rank.

That is how the system works and why you should always keep the Consultant etc in the picture if there are difficulties.

Ken.

I think there could be some confusion about the drug. Lipostat is Pravastatin which will reduce your total and LDL cholesterol but it won't help you lose weight.

Although GPs usually prescribe what the consultant asks, the GP is ultimately responsible for what they prescribe. They are entitled to refuse to issue a prescription. They may be challenged on why they are doing this, so should have a good reason.
