hi im really overweight have type 2 and struggle to diet , get bad sugar cravings can anyone give me any tips to get on the right track pleas

Hi SuzyD,

I am a newly diagnosed Type 2 and have been on a low/moderate Carb diet for the last 2 week and lost 3kg!! It really works!

There are many threads and posts in the Low Carb forum with all the information you need to start this if you want to.

I would say that if you are on meds for the diabetes and/or other and testing yourself, please ensure that you Bg stay stable.

I am sure plenty of other and much wiser forum members will join in here and advice you and give you their benefit of collective knowledge and experience.

But do start by reading the Low Carb forum and especially the pinned guide to Low Carb - it is wonderful information.

You really need a BG meter so you can discover how to keep your blood sugar down. Meantime have a read here

http://loraldiabetes.blogspot.com/2006/10/d-day.html

and look at the Success Stories thread as well as the one recommended above. These should all give you some ideas. Basically reducing not only the sugar but especially the starch in your diet will be the key.

Hi SuzyD,
Sorry to hear you are struggling, all you can do is keep trying, everytime you fall off the wagon, get back on, we are all human. I was dx at Christmas and have lost nearly 2 stone, and 4 dress sizes, yes morbidly obese, I was the same up and down as round! But the joy of slipping into a black lace dress last worn 11 years ago, bucked me up no end yesterday - if I can you can! If you need a buddy, then pm me! (I am still very fat, so you can imagine!)

Hello Alice

When you say low/moderate carbs how does that look in food? It would really help me if you could write it down. Alongside the Diabetes I have chronic ibs and cutting the carbs is difficult for that!! Have been on Byetta now for 2 weeks alongside my Metformin so am in very early days really so am not actually changing my diet too much at present else I wont know whether its the Byetta or change of diet! :P Jude

Judy, you really need to go to the Low Carb Diebetes Forum and have a good look around and a read, especially the excellent "Newbies" guide.

There are many threads in the forum, dealing specifically with ibs and Byetta. You need to ready, weigh up the information and then find the right way forward for you. I am not a doctor and do not know you, so is in no position to advice specifically.

However, for me Low Carb is 30-50 carbs a day and include eggs and bacon for breakfast with a white coffee. Lunch usually mixed salat with roast chicken or cold poached salmon. Dinner consists of at least 3 (each 50g) different vegs + meat (approx. 200g steak, pork, lamb, chicken, homemade burger etc or poached fish, like halibut, salmon, seabass, lemon sole etc.). The meat is always done on a George Forman gill and fish poached in a frying pan, but I nearly always have a spoonful or two of my own homemade dressing, especially with salat.

Snacks are for me a little chocolate (90% coaco) with a coffee in the afternoon and a digestive with a MiniBablyBell and a diet coke in the evening (I do light exercise 2 hours later).

I exercise by brisk walking at least twice a day and in total 3-5 miles a day.

This is what I have found works for me, by trying different foods and portion sizes. You need to experiment to find the right balance for your specific needs.

Hi Julie

I have been low carbing for around six weeks and lost around 12 lbs, feel fantastic and I don't get any sugar cravings at all now. I joined an online diet at first called go lower which is low carb, they send you all your meals and everything is carb counted to make it easier. check them out on the net if you are interested. But I only did that to get me started and now have started to make my own meals. I used to get constant sugar cravings and constantly eating and feeling hungry, could never go more than two hours or so without wanting to eat something, now I eat maybe 4 times a day and seem to last a lot longer inbetween.

incidentally, the weight seems to have come off my middle a lot more than when I have lost weight on standard diets before, which is fantastic as I put it all on my tum!

Good luck

Gina
