Hello

I had a bad eating episode and tested my blood about 3 hrs later, it was 16.6 . Bad bad bad ....... but there was also a Ketones message that popped up. What's that all about? Never seen that before.

Usually on most meters if you are above 15 you will be advised to check for ketones. Ketoacidosis (hope my spelling is good) is not very nice and can be fatal if untreated. Not trying to worry you thou. SORRY

I think, and I stress the word think, that is because your blood sugar number was more than a number pre-set in your meter. For T1s with high numbers it is important they check for ketones when numbers are that high as high blood sugars + ketones = "we could be in a bit of trouble here - seek help".

What is the number if you test again now?

Thanks both I'm not Type 1 ( prediabetic/ T2) but it got my attention and scared me. It was 6.8 after a "pudding lunch" of berries and cream today.

6.8 is fine. Is that what your bloods are now????

90 minutes after lunch it was. Yes am happy with that, though I prefer it lower.

I'm having a stressful time and not taking care of myself, the scary reading was after a monumental binge a couple of days ago, I just wondered what it meant. I wouldn't have asked at the time, in case someone said go to hospital! It did go down eventually, thankfully.

If I was a 16.6 I would be giving my self a correction dose of around 3 unit of insulin. So, yeah 16.6 is pretty high. Long live the normal single figure (above 4 ) continue

When I first became a diabetic back in the stone age, we had to check our urine using a tablet that boiled in urine and water. If it was over a certain level, we had to check for ketones. As it was explained to me, when your sugar is very high, it turns into a kind of acid (diabetic ketoacidosis - [DKA]), which can in turn attack your soft tissue (kidneys, etc). Sustained DKA can lead to coma and death.
If you usually eat well and maintain lower blood sugar, a high bump once in a while may not be so bad. If you start seeing that warning a lot, something's wrong and it'd be time to talk to your healthcare provider.
I read you're going through a stressful period and it's affecting your eating habits. Please be aware that stress also affects your blood glucose levels. It's not fair, I know, but I want to give you as much info as will help you.
