saw my GP yesterday and apparently i am not type 2 ...

which is kinda odd, he says i have done remarkably well not to end up in hospital..

he is calling me this afternoon after speaking to a specialist regarding insulin..

so if not type 2 what am i, and what does this mean, anyone else been though the type 2 ohh no your not thing?

Hi Scarlet.

Is this just your GP's opinion ? In which case instead of him talking to an Endocrinologist get a referral to one from him. Speak to the 'Organ Grinder' so to speak. There are specific tests which need to be carried out to determine which type of Diabetes you have.

See him again and get referred.

Ken.

Hi Scarlet,
Yes. Been there, done that, got the T-shirt, unfortunately. It took them 4 years to realise I wasn't a Type 2. Quite possibly you will have LADA, which basically is Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults...or late onset Type 1. I expect you'll get a GAD test now, that is a check on antibodies. It's not a test to worry about, as it'll be done like a normal routine blood test but it will help ascertain your Type. You may also have a c-peptide test to see if your beta cells are still working. I was told it was too late for me to have that test but possibly that test would be of benefit to you.
I think getting 'Type' wrong is more common than folk realise but I always joke that 'I like to be different'!!
Hope you get those tests you need. All the best, chocoholic.

From the point of view of treatment, Treating a T1 as a T2is potentially life threatening, the other way round is perfectly safe. The etiology of T1 and T2 are quite different although most of the symptoms are similar.
Trouble is the medics make assumptions. If you ae a child, you have T1, If adult T2, especially if overweight.

Hi ken,

this was post million and one test results coming back, after nothing seemed to be working, my GP got advice from the hospital consultants on which tests to run apparently...this was tests being done pre seeing the Endo later in August ...

thanxs chocoholic...

i had the c-peptide test and a GAD (have results on a piece of paper somewhere too) , which the Gp said he was going to let the Endo discuss with ....

apparently though my pancreas isnt doing anything :-(

Presumably then they have given you an immediate appointment to see the specialist? If you need insulin, I'm gobsmacked that they are not acting more speedily over this. It really smacks of negligence by your healthcare team. Please, chase them up.I don't wish to frighten you but if your pancreas is not working and you need insulin, you need it now, not tomorrow, next week or next month, TODAY.Please make sure you speak withyour doctor today.
Sorry, if that sounds bossy. I am so not a bossy person but I do care for my fellow diabetics and I just want you to get the help you need.
All the best, chocoholic.
