What about gallstones?

Has anybody here got gallstones? I'm worried about trying low-carb high-fat in case it gives me problems.
Hi, You can do low carb and low fat diet but it is hard to keep to. It is easier to follow low carb and steer clear of the very high fat foods ie eat medium fat foods. I have to have a low fat diet because I have gallstone pancreatitis (still recovering from June 2014) and I also tend to low card as well as I have insulin dependant diabetes caused by the pancreatitis. Wouldn't high fat make you put on weight? Altering portion sizes could mean using the same meal but different quantities for you and your husband?

Hello , I do not do high fat , had awful gallstone attacks and operation....due to other problems ..I remain on low to medium fat ....but little amounts of good fat ..like olive oil
Two much fat causes me other problems ...like increased saliva etc ....
I am not sure but the only way to have gallstones removed is by operation ...they can't be flushed out like kidney stones ...I may be wrong on this and there are several types of gallstone ....
Diet and bile along with flare up of gallbladder and stones is serious ....and I would really take medical advise ...
The pain is awful and any flare up would need a and e in most cases for good pain relief ..
The operation is keyhole ....and some people need to,follow a special diet afterwards ....depending on need ...because your digestive system can change ...good luck with everything ....kat

This is from my personal experience ...

I think I'd be best doing low carb moderate fat, and see how that goes. Hubby is diabetic not me, and he needs to LC, but I'm not doin 2 separate meals because that would drive me insane.
I had gallstones a few years back but I've since had my gallbladder removed. Does your body not tell you when you have eaten something that irritates the gallbladder? Mine did as I would be doubled over if I ate: full fat cheese, milk, nuts, white pastry, doughnuts, milk chocolate, hamburgers and anything fried in oil to name a few. All of these I no longer touch now I'm diabetic

Copied from Nina Teicholz book The big fat surprise
'One of the more startling revelations that Blake Donaldson wrote about lay in his observation that patients on a low- carbohydrate diet not only lost weight but also saw symptoms of other health problems disappear. These included heart disease, arteriosclerosis, high blood pressure, osteoarthritis, gallstones, and diabetes'

Hi, @fumanchu , are you having any treatment to remove or reduce the gallstones?
I would speak to your Doctor with regard to your diet as the purpose of the gallbladder is to store and concentrate bile, which helps digest fats.

Second what izzi has said, best to check first with your Dr/Consultant first before making any dietary changes.

I've got it under control now but was worried about the effect a change of diet might have if I went LC with hubby.

It isn't' really difficult to make a meal to satisfy a diabetic and a non diabetic. I am expecting a friend for dinner and have prepared salmon, green beans, broccoli, garden peas and asparagus. I will also drop 4 New potatoes into a pan for my friend, we both have a healthy dinner to look forward to and mine will be low carb. Also shepherds pie, put the mince mixture into a dish, top half with potato mash and half with cauliflower mash. Casseroles are easily tweaked as well

Almost everybody back in Sweden that I've read about on forums & FB with previous gallstone problems have had no problems or very few issues with LCHF whether they had the gallblader removed or not. Most of them have increased the fat intake slowly and also aimed for natural fatty food, the increased fat in the diet can make some gallstones start moving, all though with a diet consistent high in fat the risk for new stones will be less, more use of your bile. The best recipe for gallstones is a low fat diet, low use of the bile.
