Being told what to do
Have been diabetic for around 17 years now and have been put on various insulins over this period, which non seemed to do their job. I am now on Novomix 30 combined with metformin 500mg 3x daily. I have been told that i am insulin resistance therefore this is one of the reasons i have put on so much weight.
I am also told by my Kidney consultant as well as my GP there is nothing i can do about the weight gain. I have asked about Bayetta and it was a definate no no as i was told yes i would loose the weight but through vomiting as one of the side affects of bayetta. I have rescently been diagnosed with neuropathy ( to no suprise) and investigations still pending. I live in Cyprus so my diet is very good and i do watch what i eat but just to look at a vegetable i seem to put weight on!!
I am constantly bloated very little bowl movement, i do take supplements to help me go but to no avail. I have now become a homing pigeon as i feel too embarrest to go out as people remark on how much weight i have put on. I do take various other meds for other health conditions but have been told they do not cause weight gain. I am however abouit to embark on a one to one training coach as i am of need of a booster when i comes to excersise so i am keeping my fingers cross. However are there any new drugs ie isulin or metformin that is available on the market in the Uk that i havent heard about? I was told metformin helps to loose weight but i dont see this happening?
Any advise?

Hi Elixirs as far as I know Metformin can help to suppress appetite and also helps to combat insulin resistance but its not a magic bullet.
You mention your kidney consultant and as far as I know Metformin is not recommended for anyone with kidney problems, but I am no expert.

I just thought I'd answer you and bump your question up in the hope that someone better informed than me can offer advise. Welcome to the forum by the way

First of all there is usually much can be done about Insulin Resistance. It can be reduced by losing weight for instance. Which brings me to the comment about Byetta.

Byetta is an appetite suppressant and will help in the fight to lose weight by making you want to eat less. I have been on it for over 2 yrs and never vomited whilst taking it as prescribed. The statement that you will only lose weight on it because of the vomiting is frankly, laughable ! Whoever said that knows very little about the drug and it's action it seems ?

According to them I spent 12 months vomiting all the time whilst losing 5 1/2 stone.

I know you have been diagnosed a while now but some of the information we give to newly diagnosed diabetic's may help you........go back to basics if things are not good just now.

Thank you both for your replies, much appreciated.
Although as mentioned its been 17 years that i have diabetes ive always been left confused as to my diagnosis hence my post. I tiltled it "What am I? " as doctors only rescently told me i was resistance to insulin and yet i still dont know what it actually means, and how is it my body works against the isulin im injecting is that why i am resistance? The metformin has somewhat reduced my appetite to the point i really dont have appetite to eat especially in the mornings, infact i will eat a descent lunch and after that i am quite happy not to eat anything at all after that the rest of the day. I was asked by GP's to take 2x 500 mg of metformin for the last 2 years, and only rescently been asked by the kidney consultant to up the dose after haveing a full blood anylisis and a GFR. In 2 months will have another bllod test. my Kidney consultant (UK) has diagnosed me with Known mutation of hepatocyte nuclear factor 1-beta, ( what ever that means) and Renal dysplasia with cysts and chronic kidney disease. yet doctors and kidney specialists in Cyprus insist that according to by blood tests results its not chronic! I am confused. With all the meds i am on i am within the limits for my kidneys apparently.
With regards to Bayetta i will again discuss with my doctors if it does cause me to vomit im sure it wont be for ever its still worth a try.

Insulin Resistance........I could go into all the technical side of things but I would probably confuse you even more.

This link is to a very informative and simple explanation about IR and many other things....have a look around the site. It is UK sourced.

Re: medical help in cyprus

please can someone help me. im thinking of moving to cyprus with my 7yr old daughter, i was told in january she has type 1 so really need to know if she will be provided with free medical care, its so hard to find out one way or another. thanks

Sorry to disagree with you Cugila but Byetta made me extremely ill and periods of vomiting and diarrhea were the norm for me. Yes I lost weight but my sugars went through the roof and I was put on insulin.

The insulin didn't like the Byetta and I had some frightening side effects when they were used together. I was told it was an allergic reaction to it and must not use the two together again. I have put on weigh as a result of the insulin and know that I need more exercise and must cut down on the carbs.
