What are the chances of another T1 child?

hi there, i have always wanted a little brother or sister for my daughter but now that she's been diagnosed got me to thinking, if we had another, what are the chances that child would end up diabetic too?
EDIT, my nanna on my dads side is T2, as is my mams brother, no one with T1 on either side of the family

T2 and T1 are different so relatives having T2 won't matter. If you look at the diabetes.co.uk website on the type 1 diabetes page it says the risk of a child having T1 is increased if the parents have it, but it's not a big chance unless both parents have it. So I'd assume in your case there is no much increased risk, if any. I wouldn't let it put you off having more children.

I can think of at least 4 families that have more than 1 child with T1. In a couple of these cases one of the parents is T1. Sure there is a chance that if you had another child it may develope T1 at some stage but there is a good chance that wont happen either. There are worse things to be wrong.

It is possible for 2 siblings to have type 1, but it is rare. I know lots of type 1's but only know of 2 brothers who both have it, and I am one of them

well hopefully i wont have to go through the trauma of diagnosing another child with diabetes but i know i'd cope if it happened, which we'll find out in the long run because i just found out number 3 is on the way :D

thanks, it's still sinking in, we planned it but it happened sooooo quick that it took me by surprise, a nice start to the new year :D

Hi,

I would suggest giving your children Vitamin D supplements; have a look at this study

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11705562

The study shows that In children who received vitamin D supplementation regularly, the risk (of developing Type 1 diabetes) was reduced by about 80% (!).

The amount the children were getting was 2000 IU of Vitamin D3 a day.

Also google Vitamin D and diabetes for more information.

I give the same to my son; it is possible to buy liquid Vitamin D3 (pm me and I'll tell you where - as apparently we are not allowed to link to 'commercial sites' from here).

I would also recommend Thiamine (Vitamin B1) for your daughter because, as diabetics, there is evidence that we are particularly susceptible to deficiencies there.

I don't normally post here; but thought it important to flag this up.

Congratulations by the way!

Mini-mimi,

It's always best to check first with your own gp before giving children high doses of Vit D or B1 as I am sure Dillinger will agree! :)
