what are the 'ideal' readings

This may be a silly question but I have been unable to find what reading I should ideally be aiming for.
My 'best' at present has been 5.4 before food and 6.9 after which I am pleased with [better than those old 11's!!]
However I have begun to wonder how hard I should work to bring them down further

my last HHbA1c reading was 6.2 [which I thought was wonderful]

If I recall right, the normal thing for non-diabetics is 4-6, seldomly 7, so what you have there sounds pretty good.

I would make a conscious choice on the occasions when you eat something that you know is 'less good' and keep those occasions few and far between and then apart from that just wait for a while and get used to the current level. You may still see a slight reduction in your levels as it's still only a few months for you.

Congrats on the better HbA1c. Keep working on it.

Great results so far! To a degree, the lower the better, but you can get fixated on this if you're not careful. In general terms, lower than 7.8 after eating is accepted by many as the target to go for to avoid complications as much as possible. I aim to always be below 7 after eating, and only occasionally miss (that I know of!) Vast majority of NON-diabetics are below 6.5 two hours after eating, and most are below 5.5; most of the time when I do test I'm below 6.5 which is my real personal target. This has given me a latest HbA1c of 5.7% which I'm comfortable with. You need to find a figure which you're comfortable with, which also gives you the results you want with an acceptable (to you) diet. It's all about balance. Sounds to me as if you're about there!

Did you mean:- " . . Vast majority of non- diabetics are below 6.5 two hours after eating . . .", rather than diabetics? Sorry to pick up on it, but I found it a bit confusing as it stands. :D

Quite right Viv, slip of the keyboard!! Sorry about the confusion. Would be nice if we WERE all below 6.5 all the time wouldn't it!
I'll correct my post, so sorry if it makes your post look odd!
