Anonymous question submitted:

I am type 2 taking Metformin 1500 mg per day , Levermir & when necessary Novo Rapid . I have been quite ill on and off for years had no idea why until I discovered I have a Folic Acid & B12 deficiency. My diet is exemplary - I believe the cause to be Metformin, my doctor is being useless & I need help. Who can assist me? Please

Vit B12 deficiency or anaemia can be caused by long term Metformin use although if your diet is good it is unusual, foods high in vitamin b12 include meat, eggs and dairy produce like milk and cheese.

Its symptoms are general lethargy and tiredness and it is usually diagnosed when a routine blood test shows you have a low red blood count.

How did you discover you have a deficiency? Was it a blood test showing a low red blood count?

You say your doctor is useless but surly if he has diagnosed you as having a b12 deficiency I would have thought he would have prescribed some form of treatment.

That's a bit odd. :? If a doctor has noted that you have B12 deficiency then I too would have thought you would have been started on treatment?

I have pernicious anaemia, B12 deficiency which means no matter what i eat, my body cannot absorb the nutrients I need from my diet alone. Or that is what I was told when I was diagnosed wiith it one year ago at the age of 47.
I had been diagnosed with diabetes a few months previously and was NOT taking Metformin, as I have other health probs blood tests are carried out at least annually so I still can't figure out why it suddenly appeared.

The sensible thing to do is to go back and discuss this with your GP I would have thought. I'm afraid I am not a shining example to follow as after the first 2 B12 injections, I didn't go back for any more. They made me feel ill.

Hope you get the answers you are looking for.

Hi Ladybird,

Hope you have been tested for Vitamin K deficiency, along with coeliac? A friend of mine had pernicious anaemia in her 60s and it turned out to be a combo of both those things.

Cheers,
