I haven't been on the forum for a long time. Got complacent with the diabetes, lost the fear factor and ultimately lost control.
My Hba1c last week was 88, previously 75 in September. Dr has increased my metformin to 850g twice per day (was 500mg twice per day). She said if I don't get it down in 3 months then she'll put me on more serious meds which will involve self testing.
My query is what is the next step if I can't manage to get it under control. I used to be able to control it much easier than I can now and I was previously able to "get away" with eating things that I can't now.
Will the more serious meds involve injecting?
Thanks for any advice.

Okay, the first thing is to calm down. At the moment you are on what everybody starts on...metformin. If you go on to the next level of meds it will very likely be gliclazide or something similar, just another tablet. You mention self testing but this is what you should be doing anyway, otherwise how do you know what effect your food has on your blood sugars? You may or may not b aware of what happens to carbs when you eat them, if not then I suggest you look at the low carb forum on this site. Very important is don`t panic or stress, it really will do more harm than good. I`m tagging @daisy1 to give you the "welcome" pack, and the very best of luck

Thanks. I've been a member on here for a while and do try to stick with LCHF diet but like every diet I know what I should be doing but just can't stick to doing it! I do self test but I know Dr only prescribes it if meds involve hypos. That's why I was concerned when she mentioned testing.

Hi @chocoholicnomore

Great to see you posting and that in itself is not being complacent but proactive in getting control of your BG levels. If you do this you may not even need to worry about increased Meds and what that entails. From my observations on this great forum and my own experience there are a couple of things you can do that will make a significant difference right away and that most people on here will agree with
  1. Start self testing with a BFG every morning and testing each different meal before and after two hours to see if it spikes your levels and eliminating meals that do and keeping meals that don't. This is important and even if you do not get a prescription you should test anyway because then you are truly taking control of your BG levels
  2. Reduce the carbs that you are eating right away. Cut out potato, pasta, bread, sugar, sweets, cereals and replace with Meat, Cheese, Eggs, vegetables and salad. At least ask on hear for low carb alternatives where necessary
I am sure you know it is time to get control and everyone on here will do their best to support you and encourage you

Cheers

Hiya missus, long time no speak! I'm going through it too at the moment so you have got my sympathy - luckily my bg's are ok but..:(
Listen M, there's tons of info on here about the alternatives. don't get yourself stressed about it, see what the doc has to say and take it from there. And most importantly, stop beating yourself up about it!

Thanks A. I really don't have an excuse......everything in life is rosy at the moment. But I eat when I'm happy or sad! Was just a bit concerned about what might be in store for me and want to avoid injections if at all possible. At least I've got the fear factor back so that's a start! Also, discovered lidl high protein roll thanks to being back on the forum. I intend to stay around this time. Hope all is well with you.
