What do I have?

Hi guys. So I was diagnosed with diabetes and put on insulin after my HbA1C came out to be 13.1%.
Three months later it was lowered to 6.2% while lowering insulin dosages.
My polypeptide C is 0.8 (low) which puts me as type 1 or LADA. However, my Antibodies test (Anti G.A.D) is negative.
I don't know what do I have, or what type am I. Any ideas?
 
Hi. I had the same problem. The GAD test doesn't test for all causes of islet cell failure. It doesn't normally cover all antibody types and also viruses and pancreatitis can do damage. The c-peptide confirms low islet cell output which is all that matters. I label myself T1.5 or Late onset T1 as strictly speaking as LADA implies an auto-immune problem. Note also that ref NICE, GAD test becomes more unreliable as time passes after diagnosis. NICE also now says that someone presenting as slim with high sugars should be considered as a possible T1 which makes sense. Some would say that if you have been overweight with T2 for years then the excess insulin can damage the islet cells resulting in a low c-peptide; who knows.

Ahhhh....and may I ask what regimen are you on? (Medications)

I was diagnosed by default as T2 and put onto Metformin (a waste of time for T1.5), I then suggested to my 'expert' GP to add Gliclazide which helped for a while but then stopped helping even at max dose. I then asked for insulin but was refused so we agreed I would add Sitagliptin which helped a little. I was finally offered insulin when my HBa1c rocketed which was salvation! So, I now just have Metformin which helps a bit to ward off cancer etc and a low-dose statin to keep my DN happy!
