Our house backed on to a woods and it was our second home, all the local kids had camps in the woods, such happy times.
But it was also a short cut from the station for a lot of commuters and some years ago now there were a couple of rapes on women walking home through the woods. You go there now and it's empty apart from a few dog walkers.
When you got married .....Our chips: my brother, my cousin and I
We're there any kids sat on the swings having chips I wonder .....
I suspect you had other things on your mind but wouldn't it have been nice.I should have looked
My school mates, my teachers, my report cards, my first allowance, Fruit tingles, the moonwalks on TV, the Monkees (Sheesh they were SOOOO good) my mom's cooking, my Torana XU1 muscle car, the lure of a new LP by my favourite artist / band, learning DOS and above all, my first love
I suspect you had other things on your mind but wouldn't it have been nice.
I don't think todays children have the same freedom we had. They may have more material things, but I think we happier.
Dens in the woods, and playing in the corn fields, paddling in the stream. Getting so muddy, and it cost zero
I've just remembered our woods had a park as well, with swimming pool, tennis coursts and a putting green looked after by the park keeper or 'parky' and his word was the law! We were all scared of him and would run a mile if we saw him coming anywhere near in case we'd done something wrong - can't imagine kids being so frightened of him nowadays!
Going into town in the early 1970's, especially at Christmas time, snow and frost too.Going to the small local chemist to buy some bath cubes in a pretty box for presents, also buying a perfumebottle that was in an outer black cat case, and you could take the top off( cats head).
Going to the Saturday morning pictures, buying sweets from the next door newsagents ( Nicioson's) queuing up with excitement, looking at the boys( looking at us) from other schools and feeling so grown up and independant. Couldn't wait to go back the next week after the thrilling installment of 'Flash Gordon' or something similar ( Rocket Man ?) because they always stopped it at the crucial time, over a cliff, or his power rocket stoppedI wish I could go back sometimes.
Saturday morning pictures, loved it! Could never afford the extra pennies to go upstairs so we sat in the stalls, but careful not to sit just in front of the balcony as you'd get showered with bubble gum, lolly sticks etc form above!
Soap box, brilliant!
That sounds like my park.
We would pay for a round on the small putting green, and if there wasn't anyone waiting, the man would let us have another go, but we had to behave.
One of my uncles worked for the parks department, and he looked after the flower beds. He wasn't there every day.
Just remembered the park also had a bandstand.
