Hi Guys
Im looking for some advice on all my results. I have a bmi of 22 I am 44 years old and have just been diagnoised as diabetic. I lost a lot of weight and ended up in hopsital with blood sugar of 17 and 4 pluses of ketones but my ph was 7.49.

My gad and islet cell antibodies are normal and negative ( ?????) and so I have been told that I am probably not type 1 or lada as I think they first suspected. my Microalbumin screen has showed albumin;cretinine ration at 1.3mg (0.0 - 3.5). Prolactin is 360 and TSH 0.59

I had gestational diabetes 14 years ago and have stayed slim and fit ever since.

I have been put on metformin 1000 with breakfast and 500 with my evening meal.

My readings are as follows. My fasting levels are generally between 6 and 7. If i dont eat carbs for breakfast i stay between 6 and 7 two hours after but if I have bread or cereal they go up to 11 two hours after (sticking to egg and bacon). from about 10 I can then eat carbs (20 for snacks) and seem to manage eating a sandwich (multi seed) and still retain 6 - 7 two hours after. Dinners no prob at all.

Are there skinny type 2s out there that are definately type 2??? I am struggling to keep my weight up as am eating far less carbs and exercising.

Some advice would be great - Thanks

It's a really difficult subject:
Yes there are thin people with T2 who appear to be insulin resistant, these people can and are treated with diet/exercise and oral diabetes drugs.

There also people who test negative for antibodies but have low c peptide (low insulin production) are not insulin resistant and are prone to ketosis A percentage of children diagnosed as type 1 have no antibodies.
When this happens in adults, there is disagreement as to what the problem is and what to label it.This blogger asked various doctors about LADA and some mentioned those with negative antibodies.(for which there is an official classification as one of the doctors mentions: Type 1b.)

There is also a genetic form of diabetes called MODY. This is caused by the alteration of a gene. If you have a family history of diabetes it is something to consider.

Ultimately the important thing is that treatment brings glucose levels to non dangerous levels. If oral medication works, that's good. If your glucose levels start to rise, you need to go back to the doctor. If they start to rise above 15mmol/l , it might be a good idea to check for ketones (with a urine strip from the chemists)

Thank you so much - it all seems so confusing - I feel a bit like my like my life will never be good again. I know that I have to look for a new normal but it is just so much to take in at the moment. I am testing 5 - 6 times a day to check readings but sometimes the same food gives me a different reading. It is very scary and I wonder when I will feel more normal - still have not got my old energy back and finding it frustrating !!!
