"What have you eaten" Parallel Chat

Neil says that many French words are of Germanic origin and were taken into the French language when the Franks moved out of Germany and made conquests in much of France. So now I know!

I guess, then, that you could really confuse us, if you wanted to. Australian English I could probably work out (I can pretty well understand Amero-English) but Koori? That's a bit beyond my capabilities.

Over the years I have found Google really is your friend for Strine stuff. :playful:

There are several books by Afferbeck Lauder to get understanding of Strine.

Even Strine is a bit of a mystery - easily as hard to understand as cockney rhyming slang. Easier if you know what the words are that you're looking for, but that's working backwards rather than understanding the spoken word. Only when you know you are looking for Alphabetical Order, it doesn't exactly just jump out at you. You're right, though, Google is a great help.

Just had an e-mail from my SIL. My brother was asked to go into the hospital today (a day before the last date he was given) and will be the only one on the list for tomorrow - the surgery will take about 14 hours. Glad, at last, that things are moving, although, of course, it is a dangerous time for him. He has been told that there is an 85% chance of survival, which is 15% better than doing nothing. Everything crossed now and praying even harder than usual.

I would love to get my body around either of these burgers. :D

I'm crossing fingers, toes and eyes with you, please keep us updated tomorrow!

He has been moved out of recovery into ICU just a short time ago. He is being kept sedated meantime. SIL had to phone the ward but couldn't get a report, just a reassurance from a nurse that he was there in the ICU. So far, so good! The most dangerous part is over.

SIL tells me that he started to bleed again last night and it was thought he might have to go back into surgery but they managed to get it under control (which means they gave him clot inducing drugs - in his condition, dangerous in itself). Now we wait and see how it goes.

Still so far, so good. The hospital have managed to control the bleeding and they are hoping to get him off the ventilator tomorrow to see if he can breathe for himself. He'll still be sedated - after all, his breast bone has been sawn up its length and the ribs pulled back out of the way, to get in at his heart, so it's bound to hurt a little bit!!! Apparently, he was told beforehand that despite everything, he has one of the strongest hearts the surgeons have ever seen. All to the good (all in the good genes).

So pleased to read that @Annb. Everything crossed for a good recovery.

My brother is holding his own but they were hoping to get him off the ventilator yesterday and couldn't safely do it. So they are now hoping to get him off it today and to reduce the sedation. His family (wife, son and daughter) will visit him tomorrow, whether he is still on the ventilator or not. It's all being a bit slower than they had hoped but he's still with us - I have to admit, I was expecting to hear that he had died on the operating table and am so happy that he has made it thus far.

Ramadan started here in Australia yesterday, we normally do all right with some of the nightly break fasting meals from our next door neighbour.

She was not home yesterday, so no leftovers today, hope she has not gone away as she is a great cook exept for one of her curries that blisters your eyes when it's cooking.

One of her family / friends does some nice vegetarian meals as well.

Well, here we are again in the early hours. Em phoned and asked if she could come for a sleepover last night and we didn't get to bed until after midnight (no need for an early rise being Sunday) and she was busy with a mixture of painting and crafting until on the dot of midnight (she has developed a new technique of painting a background with watercolours and then cutting out silhouettes to paste onto it. Last night's one was multicoloured bands with a dark hillside and a black setting sun - led to a discussion of whaat it would take to make the sun appear black). Managed to get her to sleep around 1 am. Slept myself until 2.45 am and stayed in bed until 3.30. Then that was me - couldn't stay still any longer and got up.

It's pretty cold but I'm not going to turn the heating on - recently paid half a fortune for oil and am trying not to buy any more for a long while.

Got up to the news that my brother appears to have had a stroke as a result of the operation he had. It's still unclear because he is still heavily sedated but his left side responses don't appear to be working. Although he didn't say anything about it to me, that must have been one of the potential risks of the surgery that the surgeons would have gone through with him beforehand. We have to wait and see the results when he is eventually brought out of the sedation. The hospital has not been very good about keeping his wife informed about what is happening. She still hasn't been able to talk to a doctor since the surgery and nurses are not able (allowed?) to give her much information.

Didn't have the baked beans and meatballs yesterday evening - just had the end slice from the fresh wholemeal loaf and even that was a bit much to finish - just didn't want food. No idea yet what to eat today although Em, realising that I had some halloumi in the fridge, requested halloumi fries for breakfast!

I'm sorry your brother isn't doing as well as everyone had hoped for, @Annb .
Em's visit sounds like a very welcome distraction from your worries though! And now I want halloumi fries for breakfast too, I like her food choices! :)
