Any last minute tips for canned broad beans?

I have just put a meat loaf in the oven. About half meat, half other stuff like onion, garlic, grated cheese, chilli pepper, egg, various condiments and spices.
I was going to have that and broad beans with cubed bacon but can't find any bacon in my freezer.

Does anyone know another way to make canned broad beans taste amazing or shall I resort to tomatoes and mozzarella?

Blitz into a hummus type mash with garlic, olive oil and any other flavours you fancy. Chilli is good. Serve cold or warm gently as a side dish
Oooh, this sounds really interesting!
I think I'll save the can of beans to do just that on some other day, I have my birthday coming up and this sounds perfect to serve as a side dish, especially considering the meal will be meat heavy (barbecue) but I have to have some good stuff for a vegan friend as well.

I haven't tried canned ones, I just use frozen - and if I'm successful in growing some this year I'll try fresh ones again for the first time since I was a child! I like the taste of them just as they are, so I haven't really tried dressing them up - I like the sound of that hummus dish though @MrsA2 !

I had a small portion of porridge for breakfast, then lunch out with a friend - I had a tower burger and didn't eat the bun but I did eat some skinny fries! I had some chicken thighs for tea with buttered mashed swede. Only a couple of home grown swedes left now!

Tomorrow I will once more attempt a bit of tidying up and organising! I'll get there one day :hilarious:

The problem is that I had fresh broad beans for the first time in my life a couple of years ago, a gift from a neighbour who grew them. Canned or frozen will never be the same again now I know what the real thing is like.
Sadly, my broad bean growing neighbour has died over two years ago, so no more fresh broad beans or smoked goose breasts.

I hope you'll be successful in growing them, they are completely different when fresh!

Today I went with tomatoes and mozzarella to accompany my meat loaf. I need to work on my slicing technique when it comes to the meat loaf, tastes just as good when mangled though. And don't be alarmed by my tomatoes apparently swimming in a balsamic vinegar soup. They're not, it's just that my floor isn't level so my plate isn't either!

Ah, I'm sorry - I always feel so sad to lose a good neighbour.

I hope so too! I grew up with all home grown vegetables and home raised poultry, and that's really behind my retirement gardening hobby - I'm going back to my roots! I planted some broad beans last year but I was very late with them and they didn't produce anything. I'll get them going now for this year, hope for a better crop this time!

I grew up in the city - Amsterdam, so no home grown vegetables (although I did do a potato on the balcony once) and definitely not home raised poultry.
I tried my hand at growing veggies when I moved to the countryside but I'll likely succumb right at the start of a zombie apocalypse, never managed to grow a thing.

We do eat our own poultry every once in a while though!
We have too many, one of the reasons I can't grow anything, they roam the garden freely.

Want me to smuggle a pair of chickens, turkeys, and Indian runner ducks for you the next time I visit the UK?
The eggs are very tasty if you can find them, and if you can't find them, one of the birds will turn up with a string of chicks after going missing for 3 weeks. Which is why we have too many. :hilarious:

Yes please! :chicken::chicken::chicken:

I'm really hankering after having chickens, but hesitant because of the commitment. I know you can set them up so they're very low maintenance, but when I priced up what I'd need for that it was quite a lot of money. Still very tempted!

Too late tonight Antje to be any use to you, but for future reference, this might be worth a go:

Charred tomatoes and beans

1 can of broad beans (or other beans if preferred)
6 or so cherry tomatoes
2 tbsp olive oil
1 large clove of garlic (or 2 small ones)
Salt, pepper and chilli flakes
300 ml of stock (chicken or vegetable)
Parmesan cheese – to taste.

Put a heavy based pan over a high heat with no oil and let it get hot.
Add in about 6 or so cherry tomatoes and let them char in the
Once they are charred (but not burnt) and have softened a bit, take them off the heat
Add olive oil to the pan (let it cool for a minute or two first or it will splutter) and then squash the tomatoes to let the juices out and break up the flesh.
Add a large clove of chopped garlic (or two smaller ones)
Season with salt and pepper and add some chilli flakes.
Let this cook down on a low heat for a few minutes.
Add a drained can of beans and about 300ml of stock and let it cook down until you reach the required consistency
Take it off the heat
Add some parmesan, more salt and pepper and chopped parsley.
Add more parmesan to serve.

ALTERNATIVE:
(Not charred)

1 can of broad beans (or other beans if preferred)
1 can chopped tomatoes in tomato juice
2 tbsp olive oil
1 large clove of garlic (or 2 small ones)
Salt, pepper and chilli flakes
1 can of water
Parmesan cheese – to taste.

Make as above but just put the tomatoes in the pan and don't char then leave out the stock

Thanks @Annb , this sounds very tasty as well, and I happen to have all the ingredients too.
Like you said, not today in the middle of the night though!

I've been thinking about smuggling 6 birds on the ferry all evening, I hope I'll dream about it tonight, it's just too funny!
I'm a smuggler already, having brought things inside and from the UK without being aware this was prohibited (ahem, mostly unaware). Also a tobacco smuggler, worth the drive to Germany for a heavy smoker. Tobacco is 3 times as expensive in my country.

Our poultry is very low maintenance, just feed once a day and try to find the eggs.
They have a coop but don't like it, so on the veranda we have chickens and turkeys sleeping, the ducks prefer the ground anywhere in the garden, there is this one tree where about 6 chickens sleep, and most of the turkeys choose the roof. Which means no cleaning.

Ah that sounds heavenly, I'd love to be surrounded by all those birds! Problem is I don't live in the countryside any more and there are rules/restrictions on keeping poultry due to bird flu etc. We also have very adept foxes and badgers (I'm on the edge of a town so countryside is very close) which will snarf up any loose birds. Still tempted though! I'll wait a while longer I think.
