I am currently embarked on a low carb diet which is progressing satisfactorilly and meeting all my expectations including reducing my BG. Just before I was getting ready for bed, this evening, I took another reading to find it was 4.3 It has been an eon since I last saw one of those as preior to the low carbs I would be 13 or 14. So here is my question. Do I go to bed with a 4.3 BG or should I nibble a couple of digestives so as not to drop below 4 during the night? What would others who are more experienced suggest?

PNJB - I am T2, but don't take any medication. Bearing that in mind, I would be fine to go to bed on that score, but ss you are on Gliclazide, I wouldn't like to be so definite. As you know, Gliclazide works to encourage your body to produce more insulin, to bring your bloods down.

I'm assuming you got off to bed at some point last night, so it's a bit late for that, but if you continue to have low scores at night (or other times of the day for that matter), it might be an idea to talk to whomever helps you look after your diabetes, with a consideration as to whether your medication needs to be trimmed back a bit. Now that your diet is bringing the numbers down (and very well done on that!), it could be you need a lower dosage of something you take.

Keep an eye on things, and keep a note of low readings (I'm talking about very low 4s or lower) and if there are lots of them, then pick up the phone. Whilst having something extra to eat might feel an attractive option, personally, I'm not keen on the concept of feeding the medication. I would far rather, for me, take fewer meds and not be driven to eat to manage my numbers up.

Good luck with it all. It seems like it's going well, but maybe just some tweaking required on other aspects.

Clear and unambiguous advice "AndBreathe", just the way I like it. I have noted your comments for future use. Thank you for your prompt and sage advice.

As a matter of interest, what did you do last night?

I confess, in the absence of no immediate advice I decided whilst 4.3 is within limits, I did not want to drop int a hypo overnight, so I munched a couple of digestive biscuits. On reflection, I could have done without them as I woke with a normal low reading, and can only justify it on the grounds that I have not had normal low readings in a very long time I was indecisive. These readings are clearly the benefit of the controlled low carb diet I embarked on since the 17th of last month which has seen my weight drop 5kg (1 1/2 BMI) and give me fasting and pre-bed reading around 5 or 6 which makes me very pleased and determined to follow it through to my goal weight in the hope it will normalise my body and enable me to stop taking meds.

If I'm perfectly honest, I might have done the same as you, in terms of eating. That you are keen to continue with your diet options, I would probably suggest you monitor your numbers closely and get an appointment with your Doc/nurse in the meantime.

So many people find they are able to ease off on some of their medication as things come into line, but that really does need to be having talked it through with the pros.

Nice readings though, and 5kg since mid month is quite an achievement. Well done.!
