My main first thing would be:
. Don't try to do everything at once, It's your diabetes and what you will find works for you will not necessarily be the same as the next person. (that would be the same for T1 as T2)
For T2 as they don't get a meter normally
It's a good idea to get a meter and some strips (link to cheaper models) Use it constructively This is one way that has been found to work well,

Try to do some exercise, it isn't just food that effects glucose, walking is good.
For T1
Test first thing, before and two hours after meals and at bedtime and keep records of levels, meals eaten, insulin used and exercise. This will help you understand how your body reacts to the three most important things; food, exercise and insulin.
