What is Vitamin b1 b6 and b12 good for?

Why do we need them?

Many doctors recommend it to diabetics why ?

Higher blood glucose levels over time can cause nerve damage although I myself have never been told to take supplements by a health care professional simply due to being a diabetic

Can I use it or do I have to consult a doctor?

I take vitamin b12 and vitamin d daily.
I did ask my gp about them, he said its a personal thing
When I was first diagnose as type2, my d level was low and gp issued me with some. When I got home, I was given 10 so it wasn,t too low but but if I had know such a small amount, I would have bought them myself compared to the price of a prescription

Fyi My father in law had b vitamins injected because he had nerve damage associated with linger term use of metformin. I believe this is a known side effect.

Metformin causes nerve damage ?

This New problems

My Dad was type 2 on insulin. One time he got very fumbly...struggled with things like buttons and zips...doc diagnosed shortage of B 5vitamins. Injection plus oral meds sorted it. I think we don't always absorb vitamins as well as we might plus B is water soluble.
Another thing to watch out for.
I must add that in 30 years of diabetes he had it once.

Just to clarify it is known that metformin may affect the absorption of B12. B12 s job is to help transport energy in the blood and is essential for nerves and energy. Foods to focus on are sardines, tuna, eggs and poultry and cheese. Hope that helps !
