In the north of England their used to be a tradition at Whitsontide (now known as May bank holiday) when all the church's walked through the streets ( all dressed up in their new clothes )bands, from boy scouts to pipers led the walkers, cubs, girl guides, brownies, boys brigade, huge church banners with ribbons flowing for the children to hold, baskets of flowers also with ribbons attached for each child. Rose queens princesses .....oh how I wanted to be a princess, just for one day and wear a beautiful dress and a tiara. Then one year because I attended every Sunday school in the year I was chosen as a petal thrower....not quite a princess but I still got to wear a pretty dress and I was as high as a kite for weeks. 6 year olds were so easy to please back then and I could not have been happier
Oh yes, as a cub scout doing my parading, and enjoying the day.
My favourite was a special birthday present, going to watch a live football match in the FA cup. Everton v Tranmere Rovers. I was in heaven and the game was brilliant.
I remember the smoke and the noise, the singing and a really great atmosphere, nearly 60,000 in Goodison Park. We were seated in the Bullens Road, great seats near the half way line. Wow!
I didn't know until around 6pm that same evening that we were going, I was so excited before, during and after. I couldn't sleep.
Rovers lost 2-0, but I didn't care, just to going to the famous ground to watch the stars that played that night. I fell in love with football that night. I kept the programme for years, until my mum binned it when I moved out. Grrrr!
Have been all over the country watching live football, it's got to expensive now. Only get a few awaydays now, never miss a Rovers home game. No matter what the score, I always enjoy the contest.
Football is my only sin now!
Oh! What a night!
