I am newly diagnosed Type 2 and the first question to mind is which is the best margarine from the supermarket. I am sure there will be hundred more questions but I must get this settled in my head

Hi Robgrime. I see you're on diet only atr the moment which is good. In which case, your key issue is getting your Blood sugar levels (BGs) down to acceptable numbers. Your choice of margarine won't make any difference to that at all. Your nurse/doctor probably told you to cut down on fats, and while saturated fats are apparently not good for any of us, they don't affect BGs. That's why you'll find most of us on here concentrate on reducing the things that DO raise our BGs; that's the starchy carbohydrates.

Here's a link to some basic info to get you going. Do keep coming back with the questions though!

I hate to assume anything but I presume by margarine you mean the various spreads that are around, many of them are claimed to be of benefit in lowering cholesterol levels. However, some of the claims made are rather dubious. Taste is something that comes into it as well. I like various spreads but it is really personal choice.

Here is a link to information from the UK margarine and spreads association which might be of use to you.

Margarine and Spreads

Personally I don't use any spreads preferring to go with a good quality butter used sparingly. Has had no effect on either my cholesterol levels or blood sugar levels. My choice.

If you are looking to use one of these spreads to reduce cholesterol you need to keep an eye on what it is actually doing. I've always had slightly high levels, but the majority of this has always been the "good" HDL cholesterol, so my doctor has never been particularly concerned. I made an effort a couple of years back to reduce my overall level by using a spread and also a yougurt drink. Subsequent tests showed that it was mainly the good HDL level that had reduced and that I was probably better off not using the products.

Hi robgrime
I would suggest that you forget the marge and eat butter in small quantities ,there are no nasties and the taste is better

Personally, I'm a big fan of Flora. It's great for lubricating the belt on my treadmill.

I use butter everywhere else. Which might explain why the car smokes so badly and my wife keeps slipping over.

She shouldn't stand on your treadmill then! She's obviously not used to flora

Cut out the bread and just eat butter by the spoonful?

Love that Grazer ....

Being serious though, I never ate margarine, always butter, but by not eating bread (can't stand the gluten free stuff) I don't have the need for it.

Eat whatever butter you want to. it's all down to the taste. Personally, I love President. It also happens to be one of the cheapest at the moment.

Most olive oil spreads have very little olive oil in them.

Dislikes
Dishonesty, selfishness and lack of empathy.
I'm with you on that one Wiflib, I also like the President cheese.

The price has stayed stable while all the others, even the stores own cheapies have gone up by about 30-40p in the last few months.
