Why would anyone be on IV insulin ?

I'm confused by your question, glucose doesn't come in a pen?

Many are in hospital. They considered it for me for surgery last year. Sliding scale system

I can't see it should ever be necessary. If someone is on insulin drips, they should be able to monitor and control. As in "sliding scale" treatment. I know they don't always get it right and I have serious reservations about using "sliding scale therapy. However it's still being used. I've even "done Batle" with a consultant over its use.

there must be such a thing as it states in the hospitl notes that pen glucose was given
im trying to find out why this was given as well as iv sliding scale insulin

Could it be an error? Pen insulin instead?

Glucose needs to be ingested

hi anna
you must have some understanding of the sliding scale is it possible that as well as pen glucose could cause an insulin overdose

Yes they may well say that, I'm saying I could be an error

Whilst on a insulin drip you can also have glucose added this is because they are trying to get your levels lower however if they reach too low this is added on a slow rate also you can be given potassium as well which is often needed when you have been high for a while.

levels were as follows
21.1
21
20.9
5.8
14.0
20.6
18.3
20.9
11.9 pen glucose given
8.9
12.1

why do these levels go up and down if they are being monitored in a hospital

Levels will go up and down even on a drip food will raise these levels stress also.
