Hi Dr Hilary - I want to start a family. I am type 1 & at the moment, my hba1c is 8%. Ideally what should my hba1c be in order to conceive?

Asked by Lisa on Facebook during the 7pm-8pm live chat with Dr Hilary Jones. Got a question? Ask it here.

Your hba1c should be between 6 & 7 just as it normally should be. Your insulin requirement will almost certainly change should you become pregnant but as soon as you are confirmed to be pregnant you should be under the care of your Specialist Diabetologist anyway who with you monitoring your blood sugar more frequently will be able to adjust your insulin requirements accordingly.
