What times to eat?

I've had a prettty poor eating schedual all my life and regularly miss meals. Since I've been ill I've noticed I'm worse at night. Last night I woke up shaking and all nervous feeling inside. I'm wondering if I'm not eating enough at the right times.

I make an effort to have breakfast now which I didn't before. Then usually anytime between 12 and 4pm I'll have a meal and then that's it. I'm not that hungry anymore at all since I've been ill. Even if I eat small snacks in between will that be better?

I think we all have different methods of eating. Some graze all day, others stick to a set pattern of 3 meals. It isn't a good idea to miss a meal. As long as your snacks are healthy ones from a diabetic point of view, then that is fine, but you must make sure you are eating enough protein and fats to make up for the lost energy by cutting carbs.

My personal regime is breakfast within 20 minutes of getting up. Lunch about 4 hours later. Evening meal (the main meal) about 7pm. Apart from breakfast, we always set the table and sit together for our meals. We always did as a family, and still do now there is just the 2 of us. I would still do it if I were on my own. It makes the meal more special and enjoyable somehow. I am not a snacker, never have been. I am always satisfied after a meal and for several hours afterwards. If I do get hungry I have a cup of tea and I drink loads of water throughout the day.

Thanks, I've written a list of shopping to get. All low carb. I've put babybell cheese and hummous with carrots for snacks. Yogurt for breakfast. They are new muller fruitopolis ones http://www.sainsburys.co.uk/shop/gb...reek-style-peach---passionfruit-yogurt-4x130g

Lunch green salad and sliced ham. Tea I've gone for gammon steaks in a cheese sauce with pineapple and broccoli and cauliflower to go with it. The gammon steaks are in the sainsburys just cook range and have 4.0g carbs for half the pack and I would have half with the veg.

I also thought about reduced salt oxo cubes for a hot drink in between. Only 1.1g of carbs

Goodness me, you are working hard. Well done for your commitment to all this at such an early stage. I hope it all pays off for you because you deserve it. Keep it up and enjoy your new meals.

Hi, me again!
Have you got your test meter yet? Do you know what your BG reading was when you were feeling shaky?
Did you eat anything and if you did, did it make you feel better?
What you're describing sounds more like like low blood sugar but without testing your BG you can't know for sure. As I understand it you're not taking any drugs for diabetes as yet because you haven't had a confirmed diagnosis. After a day of low carb food I'm not sure that you would be getting symptoms from high BG, although it could be that your body is just adjusting to lower BGs which can give you similar symptoms to having low blood sugar (even though your BG is within a safe range)
It might be advisable to eat something later on in the evening just to ward off low blood sugars overnight. It doesn't have to be carb, just enough to keep you tummy occupied and processing for a few hours to come.

I don't think those fruitopolis yoghurts are as healthy as the adverts would have us believe. You would be better off eating Total, Frage, Greek Yoghurt and adding some fruit..

Ingredients:
  • Yogurt (Milk), Water, Strawberries (10%), Fructose, Modified Maize Starch, Gelatine, Stabiliser: Pectins; Flavourings, Acidity Regulators: Citric Acid, Calcium Citrates; Sweetener: Aspartame; Colour: Beetroot Red

Didn't get the yogurts in the end. Had quarter of a pot of organic hummous and carrot batons for lunch. Got tea cooking now which is gammon and pineapple with broccoli, cauliflower and carrots. I have to say I do feel a lot lot better today.
