Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Sometimes it's also the hardest meal to put together, especially if you work. Add diabetes to the mix, and figuring out what to eat can be downright impossible.

What are the healthiest choices? Using an online nutrition website, like About.com's Calorie Count, can make things easier. I researched some breakfast choices using the information from Calorie Count to compare different foods to see which breakfast is the healthiest.

A simple breakfast such as an egg, toast and breakfast meat, can vary greatly in calories, fat grams and carbs. How do different options compare?

Ardberg,

That's a good little reference, but the carb figure for the bread doesn't state the weight per slice. As you know, bread can vary greatly and so does the carb content.

How about this,

Breakfast is the biggest dilemma for some diabetics. I had a slice of toasted bergen bread with marmite and a boiled egg today. That is fine for today but tomorrow will be another problem as I don't always feel like breakfast. Porridge plus fruit, nuts and seeds is another option for me as is tomatoes and mushrooms on toast. I often wonder if my BP medication alters my tastebuds.

Catherine, how delicious is a slice of burgen with marmite spread on top, its one of my fave spreads on toast. I know its not to every one's liking, and is a little salty, but I just love marmite!

Try the above with lightly scrambled eggs on top................you will not be disappointed! :D

I personally think that if you breakfast alone it is harder. When the boys are at home we sit around the table and it is a social event and we share conversations about anything and everything. Here on my own it is a chore that has to be endured and I get little pleasure from it. Other meals don't seem so bad but breakfast is a lonely time for me. Sad or what???

As for the marmite Nigel, delicious. I know it has some salt content but I think a little scraping does no harm and the salt is outweighed by the B vitamins. I wish I liked scrambled eggs but I don't. I don't like fried eggs either. We are all different. Hope you enjoyed the link to the dancing breakfast.

Yes I did, very amusing! Can't remember seeing that advert for Danish Bacon in this country though. Watching it made me want to go and put the frying pan on.

And I hate it  I can't go without my Weetabix of a morning. I know they are probably full of carbs, but also full of fibre, which I need

I've just returned from Tescos, where I've been replenishing my stocks of cod liver oil and cinammon.

I noticed some cinammon flavoured Oats so Simple sachets on the shelf, so I'm gonna give these a try too. 8)

Hi Ardbeg - I'd be very careful with Oats so Simple!

Oats so Simple sends me into double figures and that's the reason that I don't eat it these days.

Best wishes - john

Hi John,

I'm hoping the cinammon keeps me in single digits.

Will do bloods before and after.

I remember when life was simple....................

It may not contain any actual cinnamon  - Oats so simple also has a lot of added sugar- 6g in a portion- if you can tolerate porridge it is better to buy straight porridge oats and add whatever you like to it. I am one of the lucky ones that porridge doesn't spike me..

I have just polished off a bowl for my brekkie - 220g skimmed milk 30 g of oats bunged in the micro wave for 2 minutes - keep an eye on it though it sort of has a Mount Vesuvius thing going on  I added some sugar free maple syrup and a good dollop of cinnamon never gone above about 6.5 on my meter

A good tip for when you buy anything - if its says "flavour" in the title it most always means that they have used anything but the expected ingredient to get the flavour - if it says Flavoured it has to have that ingredient although not in any specified amount.

Sometimes I have it with beries and almonds sprinkled on but tummy can't take those at the moment - you can only try it and enjoy it - even if it is only once

Good point well made.

I'll sprinkle extra cinnamon of my own into the bowl, just to be sure.

I've just checked the side of the box and yes you are right; gram for gram the Oats so simple contains far more sugar than Scotts porridge oats:

How did it go Ardbeg? - did the o.s.s. produce a spike? - and more to the point did you enjoy it

Hi lovinglife,

Had my first sachet this morning, but didn't do a BG check.

Taste wise I couldn't taste the cinammon, so probably a waste of time buying the flavoured variety. I sprinkled additional cinammon into the bowl myself and it tasted fine.

I'll revert back to Scotts porridge oats I think from now on and keep these sachets for when I'm travelling and need to take something quick and easy with me.

Ardbeg,

I would imagine what Lovinglife has said is right, the cinnamon in the Oat so Simple will be nothing more than a flavouring added, not the real deal. I would just stick with the original and best version.

Nigel

Agreed Nigel.

I'll be sticking to Scott's porridge oats from now on, sprinkled with a healthy serving of cinammon.....only £0.68 per pocket sized jar at Tescos. :)

I have tried Canderels Vanilla sachets with porridge and find its ok ..not sure if it's suitable for other folks or for me for that matter. Half a stick is more than enough for me.

Hi Ardbeg. :)

I can't decide whether you were just being a tease about your numbers with the oat-so-simple or you really didn't test :!: :?:

So which is it?

Hi I'm new here.

I've just been reading this thread about Oats So Simple and the amount of sugar in it. I've just checked my box of Original and the carbs are 16.2g of which 0.3g is sugar per 27g serving. Are the non-instant ones better than this? I am confused. Prior to joining I was told by my dietician 7 years ago when I was diagnosed, that porridge was good for me even if I had to put golden syrup or sugar on it. I never did but would have it with a banana. Whatever I would eat for breakfast cereal wise my blood sugars would spike mid morning, I'm beginning to learn why. I only have a cooked breakfast when I'm staying in a hotel.

I've now tried 4 medications for diabetes and cannot tolerate any of them. I've come here to see if I can alter my diet to try and bring done my HbA1c which has been slowly going up over the years.
