I am going on a reasonably strenuous cycling tour of the west country in a couple of weeks time. On past trips I have found fruit - particularly bananas - and oatcakes fine for keeping me going during the day but I am now on a low carb diet and am wondering what would be best to eat. Any suggestions? ( I am type two, diagnosed two years ago)

Hi Martin,
The standard way of thinking is carbs i.e fruit before exercise to give you energy an protein after to rebuild the muscles.

IF you are not experiencing any adverse effects raised blood sugars, from the combination of fruit and exercise I see no harm in sticking to that way. A higher fat intake or higher protein intake will also work but they are not released as quickly into your system.

One thing to take into account fruit means a greater work load for you liver than you think, not always the best choice.:bookworm:

IF you choose to go with carbs before excessive you mentioned oatcakes, peanut butter is a medium carb food, good source of protein and high in natural fat which means it is less likely to cause sudden "spikes" in your blood sugar levels.

Tastes great on oatcakes. ;)
