Hi Everyone,

I'm new here and just looking for some advice please.
My mum has had type 1 diabetes for many years, and has had hypos in the past which we have dealt with.
However in recent times when my Mum has been stressed or under pressure she is having extremely bad hypos with seizures in the middle of the night, and I am struggling to get her to drink anything like a glucose drink or get her out of these hypos as she is jerking etc due to the seizure.
So I am wondering if anyone else has experienced this and If anyone knows on what would be best to administer in these type of situations that would work fast to bring her out of the hypo??
I have read about these epi pens? Could I use one of them? or is there something else? Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!!

An Epi pen is for people suffering anaphylactic shock, usually from a severe allergy so it wouldn't help hypos.

Has your mum spoken to her doctor about getting a glucagon kit? This is an injection that another person can give to bring someone out of a hypo.

Has your mum spoken to her diabetes team to see if they can help?

Yes the glucagon kit is what is needed, maybe you meant that? It should have instructions with it on how to do the injection. If for some reason your mum would loose consciousness the injection could take up to 15 minutes after being used for her to wake up. If she does loose consciousness ALWAYS call an ambulance even if she wakes up after a few minutes. She should have been given a glucagon kit, unless hers has run out because they last around 18 months. You can find a bit more information here: http://www.diabetes.co.uk/diabetes-medication/glucagon-injection-kit.html
