Meat ( yeah...protein in general ..I'm screwed ) but I am eating it now. Mornings, studying, crowds, Phobias a-plenty including vomiting, flying, travel in general actual, crowds, the outside (lol)
I've just started running again, and am a recently diagnosed type 2. When I ran previously to my diagnosis, if I was running any long distance, say 5 miles ( thats long for me lol ) I would use SiS Gel, now I'm diagnosed Diabetic are there alternatives out there that anyone uses and how good are they? Thank you x

I have taken up running since being told I was pre diabetic. I've adopted a low carb high fat way of eating so am now fat adapted and run on fat. I can do a 5-6 km run at any time of day without eating anything for hours beforehand or after. Vist www.dietdoctor.com and look at the links to films like 'Run on Fat'. Loads of great info on the site too.

You may not need any extra sugar for 5 miles. I don't like the taste of sports gels, plus they have too much carbohydrate per packet and if you only eat some, you are left with a packet oozing sticky gunk. So, for emergencies when running / orienteering, I carry a pouch or two of fruit puree (in bumbag). These are marketed for weaning toddlers, but are also popular among ultra runners, as not too sweet and have caps, so can be sealed if you don't eat all and no risk of littering by lossing the tear off tab of gel packets. Available in 80, 100 and 120g total weight, containing anything from 7g to 20g of carbohydrate. Much cheaper than sports gels, too, especially if you buy say 5 pouches at same time from a supermarket.

I'd agree with @copepod in that running five miles doesn't require any additional glucose to be taken on board if you are not taking medication that can result in hypos. For most people, even a 10 mile run doesn't need this, and it is best avoided.
