@winenemo if your basal is spot on you're not supposed to vary by more than 2 or 3 mmol with no carbs or insulin active.
In practise it's very hard to get that if you're not on a pump especially if your basal rates fluctuate through the night... I know I usually drop about 4am so try to go to bed high enough to compensate for that. A lot of people have dawn phenomenon which makes glucose levels rise from about 2 / 3 am. Short answer: there is no such thing as normal with diabetes
