What's going on? Elevated BG

Hi All,

I've not been through here in a while.

Something strange (or indeed perfectly explainable) has happened with my BG.

At the time of diagnosis about 1.5 years ago I used to get readings between 4-7mmol all the time. Indeed, my first HbA1C was 5.7. After Xmas, 6.4 and later a 6.2. I'm not on any medication, as it was determined that I appeared to be Prediabetic. Nights out on the town, I would usually wake up to a 4.7 or there around.

This last week, I smelled glucose on my urine in the morning. A test revealed a 9.9mmol, which shocked me. So I followed reasonably low carb all week, but I have not been able to get my BG below 6. Indeed, this morning, I woke up to a 7.1. I ate a pickled egg and a handful of dry roasted nuts. Followed this with a Cinnamon/Fenugreek drink and a green tea. An hour later and BG is up to 8.2.

Increased urination and dry mouth all week.

Is something very wrong here, or has Prediabetes moved on into Diabetes territory? :(

Any advice would be most welcome.

Hi White,

you dont say how long since your last hbaic, I would go back to see your gp and get a test to understand what your overall bg's are doing, then you need advice as to how to progress. I have had "niggles" in my progress due to creeping the carbs back up and periods where i cant be ***** to exercise, however I Have maintained my status as the "best performing diabetic" in a practice of 405 diabetics, I have had scares similar to your current observations. Dont panic, get the tests done and get back on track...

All the best Steve

Sorry to resurrect an older thread.

This one, quite literally almost went back to normal after about a few weeks. Was it the cold? Who knows.

So, for the last few months, I've had great readings, all within the 4-6mmol levels. I follow relatively good low-carb. My HBA1C was a 5.5 in March, so was pleased with that. :D

I've quit alcohol and smoking, dropped about 30lbs and getting regular daily exercise.

For various reasons, I've added alot of supplements to my regime, as below:
1 x Multivitamin and Minerals
1 x B Complex 100mg High Strength
1 x Vitamin C 1000mg
3 x Omega 3 1000mg
Inositol 6g
3 x Taurine 1000mg
3 x Magnesium Biglycinate 150mg
4 x Acetyl-L-Carnitine + Alpha Lipoic Acid 650 mg

This regime really started bringing the numbers much lower. Started seeing between the 4-5mmol very often.

Then all of a sudden, we're back where I was at the start of this thread. Higher readings than normal again. Normal morning readings of 5.5 are now up to 6.5.

Last night I was shocked after I ate a 11gram carb meal - there was a non-alcohol beer afterward and my levels shot up to 9!! It's rare for that to happen to me lately. Mind you, I don't know the nutritional level of this beer - it's a Bavaria 0,0. Written to them to find out. BUt in context, I'll admit, I went a bit mad a few weeks ago and ate this carb-fest of chips, pasta, pasta sauce etc. Should have rocketed and it never went above 7.3mmol.

Very strange. It's always something isn't it?

Bavaria non-alcoholic beer - One serving (however much that is?)

0% fat, 0% carbs, 100% protein(?), 7.8 calories - are they really allowed to call this beer?

33cl.
I'm not sure those figures are correct at all TBH

Have emailed the manufacturer to confirm.

Just used what I found on Google. Not sure it's accurate though. The protein figures don't agree to start with.

The info you receive from the manufacturers will be more accurate than this obviously.

Well, it contains Malt, Wheat and Hops. They've apparently found a way to completely remove the alcohol. I can't believe that something that is brewed from those three ingredients is devoid of carbs!

It doesn't sound too bad then. If indeed it doesn't contain carbs :?: What does it taste like?

I've just thought of something.

On Tuesday, I had a Day Surgery 'pain injection' in my back. I'm not sure what was injected - but if Google is anything to go by it could have been Cortisone. I'll give you three guesses what that might do......

Cortisone injections can also have systemic (whole body process) effects. Flushing in the face can occur one to two days after an injection, lasting for another one to two days, and is usually not concerning. Diabetics receiving injections should be aware that administered cortisone can temporarily suppress the production of the natural cortisol hormone in the body. This can keep sugar from being absorbed normally in the tissues, thus causing transient increased blood sugar levels (hyperglycemia). Injections in diabetic patients should not be feared with normal injection amounts, but nonetheless, the possibility of impaired blood sugar control should be considered.

What does it taste like?

Not too bad, not like Becks Blue, quite malty. Quite like it.
