Whats the difference

Hi Folks,

I have been reading about the Artifical Pancreas but how does it differ from the Pump. It appears the Pump is an older technology? But searching for them both on the internet yield the same device?

My brother in law is T1 and he said that he does not like the pump but is waiting eagerly for the Artifical pancreas. He also said he was on a Trial with a device that strapped to his arm/

A pump by itself is simply another means of delivering insulin. It is open loop (has no feedback), so it's output is entirely based on the input (information given to it by the user).

Where the artifical pancreas differs, is that it has feedback - which makes it closed loop. An APS closes the loop by taking feedback from a CGM - so the information the APS receives from the CGM influences the output.

In reality, what that means is that the APS will be a more automated form of pump therapy, where dosing and rates can be increased, decreased and stopped without user interaction. Of course, the APS will always need some form of user interaction, but I believe for the most part the APS will be an incredible benefit as it will manage some of the condition on your behalf.

There are some members here who have actually built their own! Really quite impressive stuff. If you have a search through the threads you will find some pretty cool things:)
