I didn't get a meter from my doc so I bought one from http://www.homehealth-uk.comWell seeing as im newly diagnosed and not yet genned up on it all id like to aim for between 4 and 9.Ive been told be reliable sources namely one district nurse who is also a diabetic nurse that the ideal range is no lower than 4 and no higher than 9,but to be comfortable 6 is a good reading.I tested last Thursday afternoon after id got the news that im diabetic and it was 6.3 which i was over the moon about. Then just for the hell of it i tested yesterday morning and it read 9.0.I cant do anymore readings yet till i get my own equipment i cant go using the wifes test strips and lancets or shed have none left.So thats on hold till i see the diabetic nurse on Thursday morning and get me own stuff.
i definately need help re food, i did see the dietician last week and she was no help

It's an sd codefree meter and the strips, if bought in boxes of 5 packs are £26 (5x50 + first class postage) with the discount code. They are very quick and reliable.

Your readings are the same as mine, trying to get myself sorted with my eating now. Have come "out" as diabetic at work after starting a new job and affraid to tell them. Took part in all the unhealthy eating (cakes and biscuits) that was going on. Now on basal insulin at 18 units in the morning. Reads 2 hours afterbreakfast never come in below 11. I think that I Need some help.i would like to be under 8 but for me at the moment i,m around 11.2 before meals and 16.4 two hours after eating
Don't know what you eat. I like LCHF and have stuck with this since day one. I had several things which I needed to sort out. Obviously high bs and weight. LCHF sorted out both for me. For the first 3 months I was really strict. No take out, dessert, starchy carbs and no booze. I tried a Thai curry after about 3 months with a tiny portion of boiled rice and realised that I was disappointed with the taste (so I've never had rice again since) and the effect on my bs was horrendous. Same with pasta. I tried Indian with a naan. My bs hated it!I miss pizza but I like being lighter (3 stone lighter actually) and I have the occasional very small piece of cake. I have 2 squares of dark choccie a day. I have 2 recipes for LCHF dessert and I have this 1-2 times a week. I can eat fish and chips if I only eat half the batter and have a young child's portion of chips. It only spikes me to 8.5 but I only do this rarely. Twice in 6 months. Hope this helps.
You might like the diet on diet doctorWell basically i dont like curry. From the take away once per week i usually have fish and chips.Though the last couple of times the fish has tasted a bit weird so last night i had chicken nuggets and chips.I have no way of checking my levels yet untill i get my own strips etc its not fair me using the wifes stuff.Pizza i dont like.Rice i dont like either.Booze i dont partake in that stuff only on odd occasions like when we go see the wifes daughter and we dine in the smith and jones pub and i then have 2 pints.Chocolate well i dont eat a great deal of that.Sugar i have been on canderel in my tea/coffee on the advice of the dentist about 10 years ago.I used to drink pepsi max.Drpped that for OJ which i know is bad.

This one was a real life changer for me. Lots of useful info and a diet where I'm not hungry or feel like I'm on a diet. The guy who writes the blogg is a doc, specialising in diabetes and obesity. Hope you get your meter on prescription. Good luck and keep us informed!
Just noticed the no meds bit. Metformin is really helpful although some people need slow release as it gives them a upset tummy. I would be tempted to monitor bs before eating and 2 hours after so that you know which foods effect you. I would keep a food diary and I would ask for some metformin. Thanks ill take a look at that

Illness and hot weather raise my bs significantly.
That is a target only. I was 10.2 after a bacon roll the other day.Never over 7.5 at any time after eating.

It's the roll and any carb/sugar toppings that did the job
The bacon was fine
You missed my editAh right yeah they always say the bread is laced with such as sugar etc.Its a shame really cos bread is the staff of life you can so much with bread. We always keep a spare loaf in the freezer just in case. Its like milk thats an essential too.
Fry bacon and serve with eggs of your choice - scrambled, poached, fried. If you fry stuff use butter or olive oil only. When you think cereal, bread, rice, pasta, potatoes think sugar. And avoid them!Strange cos i noticed in the Atkins diet that Bacon was allowed along with other meats.Maybe it depends on how you cook the bacon.I microwave mine and it will be interesting to see what a reading looks like after ive consumed a bacon t cake for me dinner on a Friday.I sure hope i dont have to give it up
You missed my editbread bad and so is milk, cream good
Eat to your meter and you will soon work out what spiked you
