What's your number?

I didn't get a meter from my doc so I bought one from http://www.homehealth-uk.com
It's an sd codefree meter and the strips, if bought in boxes of 5 packs are £26 (5x50 + first class postage) with the discount code. They are very quick and reliable.

i definately need help re food, i did see the dietician last week and she was no help

Thats not good Ally you need some help.Id like to hope that im gunna get some form of help after ive seen the diabetic nurse. Its hard to go it alone.Id be tempted to have a word with your GP or diabetic nurse and tell em that you felt the dietician wasnt much help and you feel you really do need help with this.

That's a really good deal. I've been paying £22.50 over the counter for 50 strips each time I run out of my Contour Next strips. Grrr!

I could at a pinch share the wifes meter but id need my own supply of strips and as im on benefits i cant afford to buy stuff like that id expect it on script just like my meds are on script.

i would like to be under 8 but for me at the moment i,m around 11.2 before meals and 16.4 two hours after eating
Your readings are the same as mine, trying to get myself sorted with my eating now. Have come "out" as diabetic at work after starting a new job and affraid to tell them. Took part in all the unhealthy eating (cakes and biscuits) that was going on. Now on basal insulin at 18 units in the morning. Reads 2 hours afterbreakfast never come in below 11. I think that I Need some help.

Well basically i dont like curry. From the take away once per week i usually have fish and chips.Though the last couple of times the fish has tasted a bit weird so last night i had chicken nuggets and chips.I have no way of checking my levels yet untill i get my own strips etc its not fair me using the wifes stuff.Pizza i dont like.Rice i dont like either.Booze i dont partake in that stuff only on odd occasions like when we go see the wifes daughter and we dine in the smith and jones pub and i then have 2 pints.Chocolate well i dont eat a great deal of that.Sugar i have been on canderel in my tea/coffee on the advice of the dentist about 10 years ago.I used to drink pepsi max.Drpped that for OJ which i know is bad.

You might like the diet on diet doctor

This one was a real life changer for me. Lots of useful info and a diet where I'm not hungry or feel like I'm on a diet. The guy who writes the blogg is a doc, specialising in diabetes and obesity. Hope you get your meter on prescription. Good luck and keep us informed!

Thanks ill take a look at that

Just noticed the no meds bit. Metformin is really helpful although some people need slow release as it gives them a upset tummy. I would be tempted to monitor bs before eating and 2 hours after so that you know which foods effect you. I would keep a food diary and I would ask for some metformin.
Illness and hot weather raise my bs significantly.

Yeah it says No meds cos i havent been to see the diabetic nurse till Thursday morning then i dare say ill be updating it and hoping that she puts me on tabs first. And send me in to the pharmacy with a script for such as test strips and lancets etc

That is a target only. I was 10.2 after a bacon roll the other day.

Strange cos i noticed in the Atkins diet that Bacon was allowed along with other meats.Maybe it depends on how you cook the bacon.I microwave mine and it will be interesting to see what a reading looks like after ive consumed a bacon t cake for me dinner on a Friday.I sure hope i dont have to give it up

It's the roll and any carb/sugar toppings that did the job
The bacon was fine
Rule of thumb, all grain, grain product (flour, pasta, bread etc) starchy veg (potato etc) and sugary stuff will make your BG go up

Ah right yeah they always say the bread is laced with such as sugar etc.Its a shame really cos bread is the staff of life you can so much with bread. We always keep a spare loaf in the freezer just in case. Its like milk thats an essential too.

Fry bacon and serve with eggs of your choice - scrambled, poached, fried. If you fry stuff use butter or olive oil only. When you think cereal, bread, rice, pasta, potatoes think sugar. And avoid them!
Loads of veggies meat fish eggs cream cheese nuts. Limited berries.

Not good when you dont like veggies except for spuds and peas and mushrooms then that presents a problem.

Cant bacon be microwaved the fat drains in to the channels in the plastic rack thingy.Grilled bacon would be the same the fat juices drain in to the grill pan.

Never over 5.5 ! 4.6 is my target level at all times.

There is a bread called Hi lo that you can get from Sainsburys its more expensive so ive just foundout from the website but it contains 65% less carbs than ordinary white bread its high in fibre and almost 50% of your daily protien in just 3 slices.Im gunna get the wife to put one loaf on this weekends shopping list and theres no harm in trying it out is there.Have some for me dinner on monday with cooked meat instead of the usual sub roll.then test my bs 2 hours after.Might not even like it in which case that would be problem solved and back to the drawing board so to speak. All trial and error.£1.70p for a loaf aint gunna break the bank.
