I read an article recently, written by an American doctor, saying that a wheat free diet can reverse the effects of diabetes. Has anyone tried this and, if so, how successful was it? I an type 2, following a kidney transplant. Haven't had much advice at all on diet, etc. Willing to try anything. At the moment my blood sugar doesn't seem to have much of a pattern. I can have a fairly low reading after pigging out and a high reading after a day of walking and just a salad. Any advice welcome.

I don't know what the best diet is for transplants,
in general low carb wheat free which is mostly bread, pasta is good for diabetics and those with kidney problems not to have. going by this

My kidney function is good now so I no longer have a kidney problem. I think I was prone to type 2 diabetes anyway and the anti-rejection drugs have just suppressed my immune system a bit more, making my body less able to cope with the diabetes. It all seems very trial and error with what to eat or not eat. This web site is a godsend because I've had very little advice from the hospital, just "eat carbohydrates with every meal".

that's good news about your transplant. I'm low carb high fat and normal protein and I feel better for it,
The reversal of T2 is the Newcastle diet/lc/no wheat/paleo etc, they all revolve around getting rid of visceral fat and reducing the fat in the liver and pancreas,
it came about by the observation that T2 after bariatric surgery went into remission

I guess the success long term is dependant on what shape the pancreas cells are in

Hi magisham, I have been on a wheat free diet and did me no harm. Mind you I don't have diabetes and not had kidney surgery. As jack has said there is plenty of dietary advice on the forum. Read and learn about the pros and cons and ask questions.
The one thing I did notice was the high reading the day after exercise. I still get this myself. It is not unusual. It is similar to a liver dump that your body thinks you need expecting you to do the same as the day before. Usually a 30 min walk will get your levels down again. If you are on a low carb diet, you don't need wheat products as you will get all the carbs you need from veg or fruit.

Thanks for the replies. Trying to cut the carbs as much as possible and just experimenting with wheat free stuff to see what we like or don't like. Actually prefer wheat free pasta, not so sticky. Think I need to try out different things and see which works best.

If you have a meter, you can have fun seeing what different portion sizes of individual foods do to your blood glucose levels. I found that testing before and 2 hours after will give you an idea what's happening to your levels and enjoy the experience.
Control is the key to getting your blood glucose levels near normal levels. And the bonus is you will probably lose weight and feel better and have more energy.
