I’m type 2 and wondered when the best time to test fasting figure in the morning! But I’m a wee bit different from the majority I work a back shift type of job have my main meal very late ( to late some say )10.30 in the evening in bed for 12 ish some say test after you wake up but then most people eat earlier than me so when do I test thanks in advance

a fasting test is done on waking, it doesn't matter what time of the day if you work shifts etc but its supposed to be done before getting up and walking about etc

I get up, pee, weigh then do bloods every morning..
The best thing to do is be consistent.
You could try when you wake up while still in bed if that suits.

But thought it was all about fasting most people eat a lot earlier than I do so given the normal person would eat at say between 6and 9 sleep till say7 and test that would be 10to 13 hours fasting so should I be doing the same fasting hours ?

The fasting bit refers to the fact that you haven't eaten since the night before.. while you were asleep.. there's not really a set time period just that you have been asleep and are now awake and testing.
If you wanted I guess you could measure your blood at a set time after your evening meal.. say 8 or 10 hours. but then you'd need to be in a position to do that. Its up to you but just try to be consistent.

Was just wondering because everyone seems to test at different times ie @ tipetoo 2 normally 4am others at 8am could the figures be false because of the last time they ate or not

Sorry I’m just curious as I used to test as soon as I got up but now leave it a bit later I’ve done this now because of the late meal time

@BigJim The only reason I test at around 4:00 am is because I have to get out of bed to urinate firstly, but over the years I like getting out of bed early in the morning as the sun comes up early (it's light out side at 4:50 am as I write this) and the temps are a cooler to get some work done as well.

There would be at least ten hours since I ate last, and I would have had six or seven hours of sleep time.

So my early routine is urinate, press the #2 button on the microwave on the way pass the kitchen, test blood, click the local ABC online radio button on the pos HP laptop to stream the overnight show, then make a heartstarter coffee. :D

Hi there, well I work shifts too so sometimes have something to eat at 10pm at night. I test as soon as I wake up which can be anything from 8 hours to 10 hours later. Depends if you want to know what your result is 8 hours after fasting (the average' sleep) or longer? x

Stop winding us Poms up!!! Here at present it hardly gets light all day, though dawn is officially just before 8.

Do you only test fasting? A lot of members found testing before and after meals much more useful because it tells them if that paricular meal was duitable or not
. What exactly are you testing for, what do you want to do with the information?

It's one of the joys of living in the tropics in summer time here in Queensland, a good twelve to fourteen hours of daylight. It will be sunset around 6:30 pm though.

@Tipetoo I'm very jealous! I'm in Scotland and haven't seen much daylight since Saturday! It's been bucketing down and basically pitch black everyday since :( walked out the front door yesterday morning at 8am and had to negotiate the closey stairs in darkness as the lights had already gone off and a horrid 2 mile walk in darkness and rain followed

@bigjim19 everybody has their different routines so you need to find yours, I mean I have my tea at 4:30pm and that's it until 7:20am the next morning, of course I test before tea, before I go to bed as I need to know if I'm safe to go to bed or take some carbs on board and sometimes I'll do 6am test when I wake up but most of the time I wait until I've been up 45 minutes and need to know how much insulin I need for my breakfast
xx

I’ve done all the test to find the suitable foods when I was first diagnosed so I only test the fasting blood now

Thanks DON you’ve answered the question I wanted to know ie about 10 hours after food

I just wanted to know if my testing 10-12 after food was normal or should be done earlier I was testing as soon as I woke and had pretty good figures till I went off the rails a bit so just a revaluation of how I was doing things I wanted to know if it was right or wrong

There is no right or wrong. Any test gives you information. You could try testing directly upon waking and again before you have breakfast, there may be quite a big difference or it might be around the same, and both are legitimate fasting tests.
