When will I get there?

On 7 November GP put me straight on Eucreas ( Metformin +vildagliptin). No talk of diet first followed bu Metformin alone.

So on 7 November I put myself on a low carb diet. From then NO self administered sugar, no bread except Ryvita, no pasta, no pastry, no potato. And no cakes no puddings.

Breaches have been quarter slice of toast. Five french fries, Five bits of fusilli. Half a hash brown.Minor I think.

Results. Lost about 11 pounds. Blood glucose readings are 30/10/13 ---139 which woke my GP up, 15/11/13--- 139, 27/11/13 --- 120, 9/12/13 ---114.

Question please. Is this change in BG fast, slow or what? Will it/ should it continue?

I had BG of 118 in April 2009 followed by, 138, 133, 121, 155, 121, 159 before the 139 that caused the reaction by my GP and she said nothing except things like all is fine. Are my BG readings high now for ever because they have been high so long? They may have been high before April 2009---that was my first ever blood test.

Is it reasonable to hope to get BG down below 100 ? Or 90? Or will I die of starvation first?

And I bought an exercise bike. Manage about 5.5 Km per day. Might be more important than diet.

Your thoughts will help me ---I have only this forum for information. Thank you.

How low is low carb? A diet that is considered low carb is quite variable so I would suggest maybe you could reduce the carbs you are eating a bit more (however, as I have no idea how many carbs you eat this may not be possible).

You shouldn't be starving on a low carb diet. You may need to eat a bit more fat if you are feeling hungry.

Have you discussed your blood results and diet with your doctor? Maybe you might need different / more meds?

How low is low carb? (People's consideration of what is low carb varies quite a lot).
Could you reduce the carbs further? (obviously I don't know as you haven't stated how many carbs you eat, but this might be a consideration).

You shouldn't be hungry on a low carb diet, so if you are you might want to consider adding in a bit more fat.

Have you told you doctor about your diet and asked them to offer advise - e.g. about how many carb you should eat or alternative meds?

When I switched to low carb my blood sugars fell quite quickly (although partially due to needing to change how much insulin I was taking with meals). However, I would expect them to change reasonably quickly when switching to a low carb diet. I've heard It can take up to 6 weeks to adapt to being low carb, so maybe about the 6 week mark you would expect a difference?!?

I think I've lost you here. The only carbs I eat are carbs that sneak in inside sausages, baked beans, green beans, mushrooms, eggs, gammon, bacon ,steak ,fish, sardines etc etc. I have no idea how many carbs there are in an egg or a rasher of bacon. Like i said I eat NO bread, pastry, pasta, potato or sugar except very minor things like half a hash brown.

If a tin of chopped tomatoes says carbs 24g and i eat it with my OH that makes 12 for me. I don't know how I can get them out. I could chop my own tomatoes but what carbs does a fresh tomato have. NO NO NO. This is getting obsessive and I ain't going there,

Talk to my GP. After 4 and a half years of ignoring high readings and slamming me on tablets straight off. All I want to say to my GP the way I feel at the moment is drop dead.

My fault I did not make it clear ---I am going the diet route with what looks like some success. With no help or guidance. The tablets which frankly frighten me are for later if necessary. What I would be grateful to know is do you people think I am on course, will it all slow down, will it stall and go no lower. I don't know whether I should be pleased with my progress or disappointed. Your views please.

Hello.

Your reporting of your situation is a bit vague, but you're clearly taking the situation very seriously and, I'd say, are expecting too much too quickly.

I think you've done brilliantly to lose weight so successfully and the BGs are reducing well. It should continue, but you don't have to feel you're starving yourself. If you're hungry between meals I find a small piece of cheddar or some nuts will satisfy. They are low carb, but protein. Just don't overdo it. Find things you like which fit your chosen regime.

I think whatever you do, portion control is really important. Consider more, but smaller, meals. Also, watch those times you do slip (the odd chip, the bit of toast) can add up. if they're programmed in as part of a meal, you can enjoy them more than a "stolen" guilty pleasure. Think a bit about what you enjoy and plan meals accordingly. You have to eat some carbs; they can't be completely cut out.

To answer your questions: I think you're doing well. Progress may slow down, but will continue. Try to relax a bit more about it all. It isn't a race and you want to establish a way of eating and living that you can maintain for life.
Which you're doing by concentrating on diet and exercise.

Well done! keep it up.

Jane

Myfatsecret or fitnesspal are great for inputting food. They count the carbs, fats, protein etc. Baked beans have a lot of sugar by the way.
Its all about testing for a while then you get an idea of what works or not.
