Where am I going wrong?

Type of diabetes

Some time ago I was originally diagnosed with type 2 diabetes after a BS level of 54. the next two BS tests were within the normal range and my Gp decided that I was probably not diabetic afterall and stopped the Metformin and told me to have another test in a few months time. Anyway at the time I had started to eat LCHF and decided to stick with this way of eating to try and lose a little weight and have followed the plan quite rigidly with no bread, potatoes, pasta or rice at all for the past six weeks. I have also cut out all sugars and and am actually struggling with what I can eat at the moment as all I am eating is eggs, a little cheese, chicken, ham, bacon, beef and some salad and veg and a few cups of tea with semi-skimmed milk.

My question is that I have not lost a single pound and I cant understand why? I am not grossly overweight at 11st 4lb and 5ft 4inches but I do have a largish stomach which is made worse by saggy stomach muscles due to several operations. Most days I am eating around 20 g of carbs according to my Fitness Pal and I'm getting really down as its not budging. I bought some keytone strips to check if I am burning fat but no matter what I do I cant get into fat-burning mode. Where am I going wrong please help!

You could be adding a lot more fat to your diet....it seems to kick start fat burning and weight loss and also replaces the energy that you don't get now you're low carbing. Cream in your tea or coffee...full fat yogurts....creamy sauces ....:)

As Gezzabelle says, more fat could do the trick. I also suspect you may eat too much protein. Protein in excess will turn to glucose and thus stop you from ketosis.

I aim for 5 E% carbs, 15 E% protein and 80 E% fat.

Or maybe your thyroid isn't working properly.

I agree. From what you've posted it looks like maybe too much protein.
Two questions -
1) Do you use any diet recording software, like MyFitnessPal?
2) Can you give us a couple of examples of your daily food?

Edit - you use My Fitness Pal. Maybe if I concentrated when I read your post!!

Not sure in what form I can eat more fat?

Ok well an average day would be such as -

tea sometimes with a sweetner and semi-skimmed milk.
3 egg omelette with ham and cheese or eggs of some sort cooked in butter
chicken breast with runner beans and cauli or steak or fish with mushrooms and veg
strawberries and cream or coconut yogurt and blueberries
a few nuts such as walnuts and almonds

I've had my thyroid checked and results were normal

Hi Jaz,

The easiest way to add some fat (if you have a Lidl near you) is to buy the £1.99 tub of Turkish/Greek yoghurt its in a large 1Kg tub by the yoghurt and you'll want the Turkish looking one that says 10% FAT, not the Nestle one, also 1Kg next to it....

And they're is always bacon...

Milk gives you the double whammy of lactose (milk sugar) which will raise blood glucose and a sneaky milk protein trigger for insulin, as well. Spinach and broccoli both contain calcium in decent amounts with lower carbs and no protein.

Full fat yogurt is still pretty low in fat, compared to a full fat creme fraiche (can be hard to find) or double or clotted cream. Cream is relatively low in protein, 40-60% fat and low in lactose also - the higher the fat, the lower the lactose. Aerosol creams however are just carp.

Suggest slapping butter to melt over veg and steak, making a peppercorn sauce using creme fraiche or cream for the steak, ditching the sweetener, checking the sugar content of the yogurt.

You're on the right track, you'll get there !

I wouldn't bother with semi-skimmed milk, I'd try full cream milk, or cream. But I don't have milk or cream in my hot drinks so I may unaware of how it might change the taste too much for your liking. I eat plenty of thickened cream with berries, and also butter, full fat yoghurt and bacon. I'm not aiming for ketosis (I eat about 50g carb a day), I'm just eating fat to stave off carb cravings, and it is working really well.

Are you on any medications? They can interfere with weight management.

we all have different carb tolerance levels, but I won't lose weight on 20g a day, unless I drink masses of water, walk 3-5 miles, get a good night's sleep, am not stressed, and avoid all grains and milk. Oh, and mustn't eat too much protein.

Ridiculous, eh? But it is the hand I have been dealt.

Some people on here just cut bread and potato, avoid sugar and use butter and full fat yog, and the weight falls off.

There is no justice, is there? But then, we knew that already...

Don't want to depress you, but the reality is that we are each unique, and our bodies have unique criteria, including things like stress hormones, and menopause hormones, which can have an astonishing impact on the way we function. I would suggest that you try to isolate one thing that may be a factor, change it, and wait and see. It is a slow process, but sooner or later you will find the winning combo.

I'm still a bit confused as I do cook with butter and I'm not eating huge amounts of protein and not at every meal, but it could be the milk I suppose? My cholesterol was 6.1 recently so I'm bit worried about adding more fat!!

I've followed a lot of advice on here and also bought a book on LCHF so I'm really dedicated.......it just hasn't worked for me!

Thanks guys

It sounds perverse, but adding more fat instead of carbs actually helps cholesterol. I've put my numbers in my signature below and you can see that my triglycerides ( a component of total cholesterol) have reduced by more than 60% whilst being on LCHF - in only two months.

It's worth remembering that most of the cholesterol you eat just gets digested and broken down. The cholesterol in your body is made by the body itself, not from your food.

I am the same, have been on lchf for about 3 months now but not losing much weight. Initially lost 8lbs but now only about a lb a month. I am doing everything everyone and all the books tell me. My blood sugars are brilliant and my recent test results were also great. Am not complaining just puzzled and wondering if it is to do with background insulin. Split dose of lantus 8 in morning 6 in evening. Novorapid about 5 units a day and on about 30g of carbs a day.
Am being patient and tweaking different things each week. Early days I guess.
