Where exactly on the tummy is it ideal to inject insulin? At times I am advised to inject anywhere about two inches away from the navel and not to pinch if using a 4mm pen needle but often I am advised to inject four fingers away from the navel i.e. more towards the hips where the area is much softer than the front of the tummy.

I use both 4mm and 5mm pen needles (depending on availability) but with 5mm needles especially, I find that sometimes it hurts and a little blood come out – just a tiny drop. Is that normal or am I doing something wrong?

I use 6 mm needles and it does sometimes draw a little spot of blood but the key is not to hesitate and rotate your injection sites. It doesn't always have to be your tummy. There will be pleat of information on the internet and especially on this site. BTW " spare tyres" are good places to inject until you get used to it!
