Hello,
My girlfriend is type 1. We both live in America and I am becoming increasingly concerned with the amount of civil unrest here and am looking to move outside of the country. I have just made it out of college with a bachelor's in biology, and we both can stay at our parents the next year to save. It is challenging to find in my research countries that accept our queer relationship, solutions for diabetic care and isn't too much of a culture shock. I'm reaching out here hoping anyone could share their experience or any advice or recommendations on what countries would be best to build our life together finacially and physically sound especially in regards to her diabetic care.

Thank you for reading

Hi @saucysoggy ,

I'm sorry to say, every country has its issues. I mean, I'm from the Netherlands, and we're dealing with medication shortages, long waiting lists, overtaxed GP's practices and such too. And we're nowhere near as "tolerant" as we'd like to think. (Just the mere term tolerant rubs me the wrong way to begin with, because it implies that there's something wrong to condone, where there's nothing wrong to begin with.) But since Covid especially, it seems like people are just looking for an excuse to be aggressive to someone, and any excuse will do. Like kissing a same-sex partner in the street. Polarisation seems to be everywhere, alas.

Personally, I'd say, try Canada. There's probably enough wrong there too, but I was very happy there once upon a time, and it shouldn't be too much of a culture shock to just add "Eh?" to the end of every sentence.

No idea if this helps, but... Best I can come up with right now. Hope you find some place where you both can be happy, healthy and safe.
Hugs,
Jo

This probably is completely insane of me to suggest, but these two ladies, one Canadian, one American, are now living in Canada. Not diabetic far as I know, but there are health issues, so they'd be familiar with what that's like in the North as well. I think they might be willing to answer questions, if you have them. (They just seem like very, very nice people, so they might.) https://www.facebook.com/georgemaxandlando <-- George, Max and Lando are their cats. Don't be put off by the name of their page, which contains a little profanity; I swear it's not kink. Just cats. :)

I have relatives in Canada and Massachusetts and Canada is the place hubby and I long for. Failing that, I would like to live away from neighbours and be self sufficient. Everywhere has issues at the moment and I agree that after Covid people seem more angry, its horrible.
