im thinking of getting these books "think like a pancreas" and Dr Bernstein "Diabetes solutions" im just wondering which one is best read first?

I'm not sure as I haven't read it, but I think the 2nd book is quite focused on low carbing. Which is why I think most type 2s and some type 1s love it. Personally, I haven't gone for low carb and so I haven't read it.

Think like a pancreas is a great place to start so id go with that first, then read the other one if you need to

just ordered think like a pancreas. I dint realise Dr Bernstein is all about low carbing i know a lot about that already as before diagnosis i have always used atkins as my diet. Ill see how it pans out when have read this one :)

I could be wrong about the low carbing, that's just the impression I've gotten.

Think like a pancreas is an interesting read! I'm almost finished it

Hello Victoria .

I have both of these books and it is the think like a pancreas that did it for me .
Its 'how' its written , so easy to read , understand and highly matter of fact informative

I cant deal with loads of science, graphs, medical jargon etc on things .
The simpler the better for me ...

Hope you enjoy it when it arrives .

Anna, what is dr bernsteins about? I'm all about the science and graphs haha but is it really worth it after think like a pancreas or do they just say the same thing?

Am I right in saying its more low carb orientated?

Read Think Like a Pancreas first and you'll probably not need the Bernstein book

Does anyone know what the difference between Bernstein's Diabetes Solution and Diabetes Diet book is? I've got the Diabetes Diet book where he discusses low carbing.

Hi Sam,

I haven't read the Diabetes Diet book, but the Diabetes Solution is excellent. It discusses low-carbing to control diabetes, but also explains some of the things that cause our BG to rise and the reactions the body has etc. For example, the issues behind eating a large meal whatever it contains, the relationship of your size to the amount of insulin need etc. I know some of that sounds obvious, but this was the first book that explained all those things that I used to see as just anomolies! There is also some formulae in there for working out insulin required to cover protein, how much insulin you need to drop by 1mmol for your size etc. The only problem is that Bernstein is American and you're constantly converting between ounces and grams, pounds and stones and the American BG measurement and our own - unless you happen to be very good at those conversions, it gets a little wearing - although I suspect that won't be an issue for you
